Highlights & Route

Somnath is named first in every list of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple stands on the Saurashtra shore at Prabhas Patan with nothing but sea between it and the South Pole, a fact marked by the Baan Stambh arrow pillar on the boundary wall. Destroyed and rebuilt many times over a thousand years, the present temple was completed in 1951 and is now the centre of a well-run pilgrim complex with a seafront promenade.

This short yatra keeps you two nights at Somnath so that you see the temple at its best times: the evening aarti at 7 pm followed by the light-and-sound show on the temple walls, and the quiet morning aarti at 7 am. The second day covers the places tied to Krishna’s last days in this very area: Bhalka Tirth, where the hunter’s arrow struck him, and Dehotsarg at the Triveni Sangam, where the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati rivers meet the sea and where he is believed to have left his body. The old Somnath temple built by Ahilyabai Holkar, Geeta Mandir and Lakshminarayan temple are close by.

Pickup is from Veraval railway station, 7 km from the temple, or from Diu airport about two hours away; Rajkot airport is a longer option. The plan is unhurried and flat, which suits elderly parents and children. We provide the private vehicle, hotel and pure-vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and our Dehradun team is reachable by phone and WhatsApp throughout.

Route

Veraval railway station or Diu airport → Somnath (temple, evening aarti and light-and-sound show) → Bhalka Tirth → Triveni Sangam and Dehotsarg → old Somnath temple, Geeta Mandir, Lakshminarayan temple → Somnath beach → Veraval railway station or Diu airport

Good to know before you book

  • Somnath temple is open from 6 am to 10 pm every day. Aarti is at 7 am, 12 noon and 7 pm. The light-and-sound show runs from about 8 pm to 9 pm and is suspended during the monsoon months.
  • Mobile phones, cameras, bags and leather items are not allowed inside; free cloakrooms are provided by the trust near the entrance.
  • Veraval station is about 7 km from the temple and has direct trains from Ahmedabad and Rajkot. Diu airport is about 85 km (2 hours); Rajkot airport about 195 km (4 to 4.5 hours), and Rajkot pickup can be arranged at extra cost.
  • Dwarka is 230 km up the coast; many families combine the two Jyotirlinga towns into a 4 or 5 day visit. Gir National Park at Sasan is 45 km away and can be added as a day visit in season (16 October to 15 June).
  • Alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat, and Somnath is a vegetarian pilgrim town.
  • October to March is the most comfortable season; Kartik Purnima (November) brings a large fair, and Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays are the busiest darshan days.

Yatra Highlights

  • Darshan at Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, with the evening aarti and light-and-sound show
  • Bhalka Tirth and Dehotsarg at Triveni Sangam, the places of Krishna's final days
  • The old Ahilyabai Somnath temple, Geeta Mandir and a sunset walk on Somnath beach
