Highlights & Route
Dwarka, on the western tip of Saurashtra where the Gomti meets the Arabian Sea, is the kingdom Krishna built after leaving Mathura and the western dham of the Bada Char Dham. This short, unhurried programme covers the Dwarkadhish temple and everything around it in two nights, starting and ending at Jamnagar, which has the nearest airport and good rail links.
Day one brings you to Dwarka by afternoon for evening darshan and the sandhya aarti at the five-storeyed temple, followed by a walk along the Gomti ghat. Day two is the full circuit: Nageshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the Rukmini Devi temple outside town, the crossing to Bet Dwarka, the island said to be Krishna’s residence, and Gopi Talav on the way back. Since 2024 the Sudarshan Setu, India’s longest cable-stayed bridge, links Okha to Bet Dwarka, so the boat ride is now a choice rather than a necessity.
The third morning is for a dip in the Gomti and a last darshan before the drive back. The vehicle is yours alone, hotels are close to the temple, and breakfast and dinner are vegetarian. It suits elderly parents and families with young children, with short drives and plenty of rest.
Route
Jamnagar → Dwarka → Nageshwar Jyotirlinga → Rukmini Devi temple → Okha → Bet Dwarka → Gopi Talav → Dwarka → Jamnagar
Good to know before you book
- Dwarkadhish temple is open for darshan roughly 6:30 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm, with breaks for bhog and shringar. Mangla aarti at 6:30 am and sandhya aarti around 7:30 pm are the most loved moments; timings shift on festival days.
- Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside the temple and are deposited at a counter.
- Bet Dwarka can be reached by the Sudarshan Setu bridge or by the traditional boat from Okha jetty; boat fares are paid locally.
- October to March is the pleasant season. Janmashtami (August–September) draws very large crowds and hotel rates rise; book months ahead for that week.
- Jamnagar to Dwarka is about 130 to 150 km, roughly three hours by road. Pickup can also be arranged from Rajkot or Ahmedabad at extra cost.
- The price shown is per person on sharing basis for a standard group and varies with group size and hotel category.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
The Dwarkadhish temple is generally open from about 6.00–6.30 am to 1.00 pm and again from 5.00 pm to 9.30 pm. Within those hours the curtain is drawn several times for bhog and shringar, so darshan comes in short windows. Mangla aarti at opening and the evening sandhya aarti are the moments most families want; arrive 30 minutes early to stand near the front.
- Dhwaja: the long flag on the 78 m spire is changed several times every day. Families can sponsor a dhwaja through the temple trust; bookings fill months ahead, so ask us early if this is your sankalp.
- Two gates: devotees usually enter by the northern Moksha Dwar from the bazaar and leave by the southern Swarga Dwar, from where 56 steps lead down to the Gomti ghat.
- Dress and items: shoulders and knees covered; phones and cameras are deposited before entry.
- Bet Dwarka: the island temple keeps its own hours with a midday closure, so we reach it in the morning.
Festivals to plan around: Janmashtami is the big one. In 2027 it is expected around 24–25 August (panchangs differ by a day); the town fills and rates rise. Holi (Phuldol) in March and Sharad Purnima also draw crowds. For a peaceful darshan, choose an ordinary weekday between October and March.
Is this yatra right for you?
This is one of our gentlest dham yatras: sea level, short drives from Jamnagar, flat temple lanes and a few dozen steps at the ghat. It suits senior citizens, small children and first-time pilgrims. The longest walk is on Bet Dwarka, from the jetty or bridge end to the temple, about ten minutes on a paved lane. Summer (April–June) is hot and humid, so we keep darshan to early morning and evening.
Choose a different plan if you want Somnath on the same visit (Dwarka to Somnath is about 230 km, a full extra day), or if your nearest airport is Rajkot rather than Jamnagar. To change the start city or add nights, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
