Highlights & Route
Most Ramayana tours of Sri Lanka squeeze the sites into a week and leave out the ones that need a detour. This eleven-day circuit is for yatris who want the whole trail, told in order, with two nights in each of the main regions so that no temple is visited in a hurry. It moves clockwise around the island from Negombo: the west-coast Shiva temples of Chilaw, the cultural triangle at Habarana, Trincomalee on the east, Kandy, two nights in the hills around Nuwara Eliya, Kataragama in the south-east, the Galle coast and finally Colombo.
The Sita story is followed closely. At Seetha Eliya the Seetha Amman temple marks the Ashok Vatika where she was held; at Divurumpola, a Buddhist temple south of Nuwara Eliya, local tradition places her agni pariksha, the fire ordeal, and the site is still used for taking oaths; near Ella the Ravana Ella falls and the cave high above the road are linked to her hiding places. Hanuman’s part is remembered at Ramboda and at Rumassala hill near Galle, said to be a fragment of the Himalayan mountain he carried for the Sanjeevani herb. Rama’s prayers after the war are at Munneswaram and Manavari, and Vibhishana, who sided with Rama, has his shrine at Kelaniya. Koneswaram at Trincomalee and the Kataragama shrine of Murugan complete the Shaiva circuit.
Around the trail are the island’s great sights, which deserve their own time: the Sigiriya rock, Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth, the Kanniya hot springs, tea estates, the Galle Fort and the Madu river mangroves. Indian passport holders enter on a free 30-day ETA, flights are short, and the whole journey is by private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide. The pace suits senior yatris and extended families.
