Amazing Bhutan

8 Days

Highlights & Route

Bhutan rewards those who go a little beyond the two usual towns. This eight-day programme flies into Paro and spends two nights in Thimphu, two in the high glacial valley of Phobjikha and three in Paro, passing through Punakha and over the Dochula pass on the way. It is the right length to see western Bhutan without the daily packing and unpacking of shorter tours, and it includes the two things every visitor hopes for: the Tiger’s Nest monastery on its cliff and the black-necked cranes, if you travel between late October and February.

Thimphu gives the great seated Buddha Dordenma, over 50 m tall and visible from most of the valley, the National Memorial Chorten where elderly residents circle with prayer wheels all day, the Tashichho Dzong that houses the government and the central monk body, and the takin preserve. The road east climbs to Dochula (about 3,100 m), where 108 memorial chortens stand against a wall of Himalayan peaks on a clear morning, and then winds down to Punakha, the old winter capital, whose dzong at the meeting of two rivers is the most beautiful in the country. Phobjikha, at about 3,000 m, is a wide marshy bowl ringed by forest where the cranes winter; the Gangtey monastery looks over it and a gentle nature trail crosses the valley floor.

The last three nights in Paro let you take the Tiger’s Nest climb on a fresh morning and still have a full day for the Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum, Kyichu Lhakhang and the iron-chain bridge at Tachog. Indian nationals need no visa, only an entry permit, and the Sustainable Development Fee of Rs 1,200 per night is included in the price. Flights to Paro are not included.

Route

Paro airport → Thimphu (2 nights) → Dochula pass → Wangdue → Phobjikha / Gangtey (2 nights) → Punakha → Dochula → Paro (3 nights) → Paro airport

Good to know before you book

  • Indian citizens need an entry permit, not a visa. It is issued against a passport valid for six months or an Election Commission Voter ID, and can be applied for online in advance or on arrival at Paro. Travel insurance for the stay is required at the permit stage.
  • The Sustainable Development Fee for Indian nationals is Rs 1,200 per person per night (half for children aged 6-12, nil below 6) and is included in this package.
  • Flights to Paro operate from Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra and Guwahati on Drukair and Bhutan Airlines; fares are not included and seats are limited, so book early.
  • Phobjikha is at about 3,000 m and cold; hotels there have heating but nights can drop below freezing from November to February.
  • Black-necked cranes are present roughly from late October to mid-February; outside those months the valley is still worth the visit for its landscape and monastery.
  • The Tiger’s Nest hike is a 900 m climb over about 4-5 hours round trip; a pony can be hired for part of the ascent at extra cost. Dzongs and temples require covered arms and legs, and photography is not allowed inside shrine rooms.
