Explore Nature’s Serenity in Vietnam

7 Days

Highlights & Route

Vietnam is a long, thin country, and this programme travels its whole length from north to south in a week, using two domestic flights to avoid days on the road. It is a mix of three things Indian families enjoy: sacred places, from the thousand-year-old pagodas of Hanoi to the Hindu towers of My Son; scenery, especially the limestone karst and rivers of Ninh Binh; and towns with character, imperial Hue and the lantern-lit old port of Hoi An.

The north comes first. Two nights in Hanoi cover the Ngoc Son temple on Hoan Kiem lake, the Tran Quoc pagoda on West Lake (the oldest in the city, dating to the sixth century), the One Pillar pagoda and the Temple of Literature, a Confucian academy founded in 1070. A day visit south to Ninh Binh brings the vast Bai Dinh pagoda complex and a rowing-boat ride through the caves and rice paddies of Trang An, a UNESCO landscape. Then a flight to Hue, the nineteenth-century capital, for the Perfume River, the seven-storey Thien Mu pagoda, the walled Imperial City and the emperors’ tombs.

From Hue the road crosses the Hai Van pass to My Son, where the Champa kings built brick towers to Shiva, worshipped as Bhadreshvara, between the fourth and thirteenth centuries; it is the most important Hindu site in Vietnam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The night is in Hoi An, and a second flight takes you to Ho Chi Minh City for the Jade Emperor pagoda and the Thien Hau temple in Cholon, with an optional Mekong Delta excursion. Vegetarian breakfast and dinner are included every day, which in Vietnam needs planning and is why we arrange them.

Route

Hanoi (2 nights) → Ninh Binh: Bai Dinh and Trang An (1 night) → fly to Hue (1 night) → Hai Van pass → My Son → Hoi An (1 night) → fly from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City (1 night) → Tan Son Nhat airport

Good to know before you book

  • Indian passport holders need a Vietnam e-visa, applied for at evisa.gov.vn (USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry, stay of up to 90 days). Allow five to seven working days for issue, print the approval letter, and make sure your passport has six months’ validity. We guide you through the form but the application is in your name.
  • Two domestic flights (Hanoi to Hue, Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City) are part of this programme and are included in the price; international flights into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City are not. Vietnamese domestic baggage allowance is usually 20 to 23 kg checked plus 7 to 10 kg cabin.
  • Vegetarian food is well understood in Vietnam because of the Buddhist tradition (ask for ‘an chay’); fish sauce is the hidden ingredient to watch, and our guides brief every restaurant. Dinners are at vegetarian or Indian restaurants.
  • Weather varies by region: Hanoi and Ninh Binh are cool and misty from December to February and hot from May to August; Hue and Hoi An have their rainy season from September to December; Ho Chi Minh City is warm all year with afternoon showers from May to October. February to April is the most even month range for the whole route.
  • Pagodas and the Imperial City expect covered shoulders and knees. Shoes are removed inside pagoda halls. The My Son towers are in open sun with little shade; carry a hat and water.
