Highlights & Route
Ayodhya is best understood on foot. The old town between the Saryu river and the Ram Janmabhoomi is a dense weave of ghats, lanes, maths and small temples, most of them within a kilometre of each other. This guided walk of roughly four hours covers that stretch at an easy pace, with a local guide who explains the stories attached to each place: why Ram Ki Paidi was built, what the Nageshwarnath temple has to do with Kush, and how Hanuman Garhi came to guard the entrance to the city.
You can take the walk at sunrise, when the ghats are quiet and bathing is at its most peaceful, or in the late afternoon so that it ends with the Saryu aarti after sunset. Both versions include a holy dip (optional) at the designated bathing ghat, darshan at Nageshwarnath, Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhavan, and a stop at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir if the darshan session is open at that hour.
The walk is ideal as an add-on for yatris who are already in Ayodhya with a free morning or evening, or for those passing through on the way between Lucknow, Varanasi and Prayagraj. We keep groups small, provide drinking water and a light snack, and the guide carries a dry bag for your phones while you bathe.
Route
Ram Ki Paidi (meeting point) → Saryu bathing ghat → Nageshwarnath temple → Hanuman Garhi → Kanak Bhavan → Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir (if open) → back to the ghats for Saryu aarti
Good to know before you book
- Total walking distance is about 3 to 4 km on paved lanes and ghat steps. Hanuman Garhi has about 76 steps to the top.
- Phones, cameras and bags are not permitted inside the Ram Mandir premises; a locker is available at the entry. Photography on the ghats and in the lanes is fine.
- Saryu aarti takes place at Ram Ki Paidi every evening after sunset; the exact time moves with the season, so the evening walk starts accordingly.
- Dress modestly for the temples; carry a change of clothes and a small towel if you plan to bathe.
- On Ram Navami, Diwali, Kartik Purnima and Saryu snan days the ghats are extremely crowded, and the route may be altered by the police.
- October to March is the most comfortable period; in summer we recommend the sunrise version.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
The evening version of this walk is timed backwards from the Saryu aarti, which begins around sunset: roughly 5.30 pm in winter and after 6.45 pm in summer. The sunrise version starts about 30 minutes before sunrise, when the ghats are quiet and the snan is most peaceful. Temples on the route keep their own hours; Kanak Bhavan, for example, closes for a few hours in the afternoon, which is why the evening walk reaches it after it reopens.
- Ram Mandir hours: the Trust has run darshan from early morning (about 6–7 am) to about 9.30 pm, with a short break around midday for bhog; hours have changed several times since 2024, so we check on the day.
- Ram Darbar: since August 2026 the separate pass for the Ram Darbar on the first floor has been removed. After Ram Lalla darshan in the general line, devotees can go up directly.
- Aarti passes: mangala, shringar, sandhya and shayan aarti passes are free and limited, issued by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust with photo ID.
- Not allowed: phones, smartwatches, cameras, bags and pens. Lockers and shoe counters are at the entry.
Festivals to plan around: Deepotsav on the eve of Diwali (early November 2026), when the ghats are lit with lakhs of diyas and access is controlled; the Kartik Purnima snan and the Panchkosi and Chaudahkosi parikramas in the Kartik month; Ram Navami on 15 April 2027; and Sawan Jhula in July–August. On these days police may close lanes to walkers and the route is shortened.
Is this yatra right for you?
Choose the ghat walk if you are already in Ayodhya and have a free morning or evening, and you want to understand the town rather than only see it. The pace is easy, but it is still 3–4 km on foot with steps at the ghats and about 76 at Hanuman Garhi. Senior citizens who can walk for an hour at a stretch are comfortable; e-rickshaw help can be arranged for the longer gaps. Children enjoy the stories told on the spot.
It is not the best choice if your main aim is a guaranteed, unhurried Ram Lalla darshan with time for Ram Darbar; the walk includes the Ram Mandir only if the session is open at that hour. For that, take the morning darshan programme or the three-day stay. To book a sunrise or evening slot, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
