Highlights & Route
Nepal’s two best-loved valleys could not be more different. Kathmandu is dense with temples, courtyards and history, while Pokhara spreads around a lake with the Annapurna range standing above it. This six-day visit gives you three nights in the capital and two in Pokhara, with a comfortable road journey along the Trishuli river between them, so that you see both the devotional and the natural face of the country without rushing.
In Kathmandu the programme covers the three monuments every pilgrim wants: Pashupatinath on the Bagmati, where the sanctum holds a four-faced Shivalinga and Indian nationals enter freely; Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal; and Swayambhunath on its hilltop west of the city. All three are part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Pokhara the days are easier: a boat on Fewa Lake to the Tal Barahi island temple, the Bindhyabasini Devi temple, the plunge of Devi’s Fall into Gupteshwor Mahadev cave, the deep Seti gorge, and, for those willing to rise early, dawn at Sarangkot when the first light touches Machhapuchhre, the Fishtail peak.
The yatra is suited to families with elderly members and to first-time visitors to Nepal. Walking is moderate and there is no altitude to worry about: Kathmandu lies at about 1,400 m and Pokhara at roughly 800 m. Indian citizens need no visa, so you can decide on dates at short notice. Those pressed for time can swap the return drive for a 25-minute flight at extra cost.
Route
Kathmandu (arrival) → Kathmandu valley temples → Pokhara via Trishuli valley (about 200 km, 6-7 hours) → Pokhara sightseeing → Kathmandu → departure
