Kuala Lumpur is the easiest international holiday an Indian family can take: no visa, direct flights of about four to five hours from most metros, Tamil spoken in half the restaurants, and one of the great Murugan shrines outside India at Batu Caves on the city’s edge. This five-day programme is built for mixed-age groups, with a temple morning, a city tour, a hill day and a theme-park day, all from one hotel in the city centre.

Batu Caves is the anchor. A 42.7 m gold-painted statue of Lord Murugan stands at the foot of the 272 rainbow-coloured steps that climb to the Temple Cave, a limestone cavern over 100 m high with the shrine at its far end. It is the focus of Malaysia’s Thaipusam festival each January or February, when over a million devotees gather. The same day covers the landmarks of the capital: the Petronas Twin Towers, Merdeka Square and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the Istana Negara gates and the National Mosque.

The third day climbs to Genting Highlands at about 1,800 m, with the Awana SkyWay cable car ride over the rainforest and the choice of the Genting SkyWorlds outdoor park, the indoor Skytropolis or simply the cool air and the Chin Swee Caves Temple on the ridge. The fourth day is Sunway Lagoon at Bandar Sunway, a water park, amusement park and wildlife park in one, which children love and grandparents can enjoy from the shade. Evenings are free for Little India at Brickfields, Jalan Alor or the KLCC park fountains.

Good to know before you book

Indian citizens can enter Malaysia without a visa for tourism stays of up to 30 days; Malaysia has extended this exemption to 31 December 2026 and we will confirm its status for your travel date. You must file the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac within three days before arrival, and carry your return ticket and hotel confirmation for the immigration counter.
Malaysia charges foreign tourists a tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night, collected by the hotel at check-in; it is not part of the package price.
Batu Caves: the 272 steps are steep and the resident macaques are bold. Shorts and short skirts are not allowed in the Temple Cave; sarongs are available for hire at the bottom. The best time is before 9 am, before the heat and the coaches.
Genting Highlands is noticeably cool (15 to 22 degrees) and often misty; carry a light jacket. Outdoor rides at SkyWorlds may close in heavy rain, and tickets to the parks at Genting and Sunway Lagoon are on the day, so timings are flexible.
International flights are not included. Malaysia is two and a half hours ahead of India; plan arrival by early afternoon to use the first day.

Day 1 :

Arrival in Kuala Lumpur

Our representative meets you at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA Terminal 1 or 2, as per your airline) at your arrival point (airport, railway station or hotel) at the agreed time. The drive into the city is about an hour by expressway. Check in to your hotel in the Bukit Bintang or KLCC area and rest.

In the evening, walk to the KLCC park to see the Petronas Towers lit up and the lake fountain show, or take a short taxi to Brickfields, the city's Little India, for dinner at one of its many South Indian vegetarian restaurants. Dinner on your own.

Day 2 :

Batu Caves and Kuala Lumpur city tour

Leave after an early breakfast for Batu Caves, about 13 km north of the city. The Sri Subramaniar Swamy temple complex sits inside a limestone hill some 400 million years old; the 42.7 m Murugan statue at the base was unveiled in 2006. Climb the 272 steps at your own pace to the Temple Cave, where the main shrine stands under a natural skylight, and take darshan. The Ramayana Cave at the foot of the hill, with painted dioramas of the epic, and the Cave Villa are optional extras with small tickets.

Return to the city for a half-day visit: a photo stop at the Petronas Twin Towers, the gates of Istana Negara, the national palace, Merdeka Square where independence was declared in 1957, the Moorish-style Sultan Abdul Samad Building opposite, and the National Mosque with its 73 m minaret and folded-umbrella roof (robes are lent to visitors; closed to non-worshippers during prayer times). Lunch on your own at Brickfields or Central Market. Evening free.

Day 3 :

Genting Highlands day visit

After breakfast drive about an hour north-east into the Titiwangsa range to the Awana station, and ride the Awana SkyWay cable car, one of the longest in South-East Asia, for roughly ten minutes over the rainforest canopy to the Genting resort at about 1,800 m. The cable car stops midway at the Chin Swee Caves Temple, a Chinese Buddhist-Taoist temple with a pagoda and large Buddha statue on the hillside, which is worth a half-hour.

At the top choose between Genting SkyWorlds, the outdoor theme park, the indoor Skytropolis rides, the SkyAvenue shopping mall with its Indian food court, or simply a walk in the cool mist. Park tickets are optional and bought on the day. Return by cable car and vehicle to Kuala Lumpur by evening. Dinner on your own.

Day 4 :

Sunway Lagoon

After breakfast drive about 30 minutes to Bandar Sunway. Sunway Lagoon is a large leisure park built in a former tin-mining quarry with six zones: the water park with its surf beach and slides, an amusement park, a wildlife park with birds and small animals, an extreme park, a Nickelodeon-themed area and a Lost Lagoon. Entry to all zones is included; lockers, towels and food are at your own cost. Spend the whole day, or return to the hotel mid-afternoon if the family prefers.

Those who do not fancy the park can instead be dropped at the Sunway Pyramid mall next door, one of the city's biggest, or take an optional visit to the Thean Hou Temple, the ornate six-tiered Chinese temple on Robson Hill. Evening free; Jalan Alor's street-food lane and Bukit Bintang's malls are a short walk from most hotels.

Day 5 :

Departure

Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. If your flight is in the afternoon or evening, the morning is free for shopping at Pavilion or Suria KLCC, or a quick visit to the Thean Hou Temple or the KL Tower observation deck (optional). Transfer to Kuala Lumpur International Airport at your departure point (airport, railway station or hotel) three hours before departure.

Do Indians need a visa for Malaysia?

No visa is needed for tourist stays of up to 30 days; Malaysia has extended this exemption for Indian citizens to 31 December 2026, and we will confirm the position for your dates before you book flights. You must fill the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before arrival, and carry a return ticket and hotel confirmation, which immigration may ask to see. Your passport needs six months’ validity.

Is the climb at Batu Caves difficult?

There are 272 steps, steep but with handrails and landings to rest on. Most people take ten to fifteen minutes going up. Elderly yatris who prefer not to climb can still take darshan at the shrines at the base and see the Murugan statue; there is no lift. Go early in the morning when it is cooler and quieter.

Is vegetarian food easy to find in Kuala Lumpur?

Extremely easy. Brickfields (Little India), Masjid India and Bangsar have dozens of South Indian vegetarian restaurants, banana-leaf meals and chaat shops, and most malls have an Indian counter in the food court. The Genting SkyAvenue mall and Sunway Pyramid also have Indian options. Meals other than breakfast are left open for exactly this reason.

Are the Genting and Sunway Lagoon park tickets included?

The Sunway Lagoon all-park ticket and the return Awana SkyWay cable car are included. Genting’s own theme parks, SkyWorlds (outdoor) and Skytropolis (indoor), are optional and bought on the day, because many families prefer just the cable car, the temple and the cool air. Ticket prices change seasonally; we share current rates before travel.

Can we visit Thaipusam at Batu Caves?

Thaipusam falls in late January or early February each year, on the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai, and is one of the largest Hindu gatherings outside India; the kavadi procession walks from Kuala Lumpur to the caves overnight. It is unforgettable but extremely crowded, and hotels are full. If you want to time your visit for it, tell us early and we will plan the day around the festival rather than the standard yatra.

What currency and how much spending money?

The Malaysian ringgit (RM). Cards are accepted almost everywhere and ATMs are plentiful; carry a little cash for small shops and temple offerings. The tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night is paid at the hotel. For meals and local spending, a modest budget of RM 100 to 150 per person per day is comfortable.

Can grandparents skip Sunway Lagoon on this Malaysia holiday?

Yes. Day 4 is flexible. Grandparents can spend time in the shaded areas of the park, return to the hotel mid-afternoon, or be dropped at the Sunway Pyramid mall next door instead. An optional visit to the Thean Hou Temple, the six-tiered Chinese temple on Robson Hill, is another quiet choice. Tell us in advance so the driver can plan the split.
