Highlights & Route
Kamakhya on Nilachal Hill above the Brahmaputra is the most revered of all the Shakti Peeths, the seat of the Goddess where the yoni of Sati is believed to have fallen. There is no idol in the sanctum; devotees descend into a rock cave to a natural spring over a stone fissure, kept moist and covered with cloth and flowers. For Shakta devotees a visit here is the fulfilment of a lifetime, and for ordinary families it is a deeply moving darshan unlike any other in India.
Our three-day package gives Kamakhya the time it deserves. We take you up the hill before sunrise on Day 2 so that you are in the queue when the doors open, and we help you choose between the free line and the paid quick-darshan ticket depending on the crowd. The rest of the day covers Guwahati’s other ancient shrines: the Bhuvaneshwari temple on the summit above Kamakhya with its view of the river, the Umananda Shiva temple on Peacock Island reached by a short ferry, the Navagraha temple on Chitrachal Hill, Shukreswar on the riverbank, the Bhimeswar Dham and the Basistha ashram at the city’s edge.
You stay two nights in a comfortable Guwahati hotel with vegetarian breakfast and dinner, travel by private air-conditioned vehicle and have a coordinator from our Dehradun office on call throughout. Guwahati airport has direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata and most metros, so the yatra fits easily into a long weekend.
Route

Good to know before you book
- Kamakhya opens early morning for darshan; the general queue can take several hours on weekends and in Navratri, so we start before dawn and advise on the paid quick-darshan line when it is available.
- The sanctum is closed for three days every June during Ambubachi Mela (22–26 June in 2026, with the 2027 dates to be announced by the temple); lakhs of sadhus and devotees gather and ordinary darshan is not possible, so avoid those dates unless you specifically want the mela.
- Animal sacrifice is still practised at Kamakhya; sensitive yatris may wish to avoid the sacrifice area, and our coordinator will guide you.
- Phones and cameras are not allowed inside the main temple; lockers are available near the gate.
- The Umananda ferry depends on river conditions and is suspended when the Brahmaputra is in flood (usually July–August).
- October to March is pleasant; April–May is hot and the monsoon is heavy from June to September.
