Highlights & Route
The Shivalik foothills of Himachal Pradesh hold a chain of Devi temples that pilgrims have walked between for centuries. Six of the best known can be covered in a compact three-day road circuit from Chandigarh: Naina Devi on its hilltop above the Gobind Sagar, Chintpurni, the goddess who removes worries, Jwalaji with its eternal flames, Baglamukhi at Bankhandi, Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra town and Chamunda Devi on the Baner river. Anandpur Sahib, where Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa, falls on the first day’s road and is included.
The distances are moderate but the roads are hilly, so we keep to one main driving stretch per day and halt at Chintpurni and Kangra, both of which have the temple within easy reach of the hotel. The first and last days are the longest at roughly eight hours each including stops, which is why the middle day is kept light with just three temples and a visit to Kangra Fort.
Hotels are simple, clean and vegetarian, with breakfast included. Lunch and dinner are on your own; every temple town on this route has dhabas and langars serving good hill food. A private AC vehicle sized to your group stays with you from Chandigarh airport or railway station to the drop. The circuit suits families, elderly parents and groups of friends travelling together during Navratri or at any time of year.
Route
Chandigarh → Anandpur Sahib → Naina Devi → Chintpurni (1 night) → Jwalaji → Baglamukhi → Kangra Fort → Kangra (1 night) → Brajeshwari Devi → Chamunda Devi → Chandigarh drop
Good to know before you book
- Naina Devi temple is on a hilltop; a ropeway runs from the base and saves a steep climb. Ropeway tickets are paid locally.
- Jwalaji is unusual in having no idol; the goddess is worshipped as natural flames that burn from the rock, so the sanctum is small and the queue moves slowly.
- Navratri (March–April and September–October) and the Shravan Ashtami fair at Chintpurni in July–August draw very large crowds; expect long queues and heavy traffic on those dates.
- Monsoon months (July–September) bring landslides and slow hill roads; the itinerary may be re-ordered for safety.
- Carry warm clothes from November to February; mornings at Chintpurni and Kangra are cold.
- Phones are generally allowed at these temples but photography inside sanctums is not; leather items are discouraged at several of them.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
All six Devi temples on this circuit open early, around dawn, and stay open until late evening, with short closures for bhog. Exact hours shift between summer and winter, so our driver confirms them each morning. A few points help the day run smoothly:
- Naina Devi: the ropeway saves the steep stepped climb; on Sundays and festival days its queue can take longer than walking, so we decide on the spot.
- Chintpurni: the lane to the temple fills quickly after 8 am. Attending the evening aarti on Day 1 and an early darshan before checkout is the calmest way.
- Jwalaji: the goddess is worshipped as flames from the rock, and several aartis are performed through the day. The sanctum is small, so the queue moves slowly around aarti times; mid-morning on a weekday is usually easiest.
- Baglamukhi, Bankhandi: yellow is the colour of the goddess; many devotees wear yellow and offer yellow flowers or sweets. Havan can be booked with the temple priests if you wish.
- Brajeshwari Devi: after Makar Sankranti the pindi is covered with butter (ghrit) for about a week in a festival unique to Kangra, which draws crowds in mid-January.
Festivals to plan around. Chaitra Navratri 2027 falls from 7 to 15 April, and Sharad Navratri in September–October. Both bring very large crowds and slow traffic between temples. The Shravan Ashtami fairs at Naina Devi and Chintpurni (July–August) coincide with the monsoon. If you want festival darshan, add a buffer day; if you want ease, travel in October–November or February–March.
Is this yatra right for you?
The temples themselves need only short walks and some steps. The demanding part is the road: Day 1 and Day 3 are each about eight hours of hill driving with stops. Elderly parents manage well if they are comfortable in a car for long stretches and carry motion-sickness tablets. Small children may find the long days tiring.
It is not the right yatra if you want a single, deeply devotional darshan rather than a circuit; for that, our Mata Vaishno Devi yatra from Jammu gives a full day to one Bhawan. If you are fit and want the Himachal Devis together with a high-altitude trek, the 7 Devi Darshan with Manimahesh Kailash adds Manimahesh. Families in Uttarakhand who prefer shorter drives can look at our Kumaon yatra with the Varahi Devi Shakti Peeth.
