Highlights & Route

Ambaji, in the Aravalli hills near the Rajasthan border, is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths and the most important Devi temple in Gujarat. The Puranas say the heart of Sati fell here. The sanctum holds no idol: the goddess is worshipped as the Visa Yantra, a sacred geometric diagram, which the priests dress and adorn so that from the hall it appears as a seated Devi. Across the valley rises Gabbar hill, the original seat of the goddess, with a small shrine on top reached by about a thousand steps or a ropeway.

This 5-day plan gives Ambaji two nights, enough for an unhurried morning darshan, the evening aarti, Gabbar hill and the nearby Kamakshi temple and Koteshwar on the Saraswati. It then brings you back to Ahmedabad for two nights of a different kind: the Akshardham temple at Gandhinagar, Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram, the carved Adalaj stepwell, the Hutheesing Jain temple and the Kalupur Swaminarayan temple in the old city, with evenings on the Sabarmati riverfront.

Ahmedabad is the start and end point, with its airport and railway junction, and the drive to Ambaji is about four hours each way on good roads. The plan suits elderly parents and children: the only strenuous part, the Gabbar climb, has a ropeway alternative. A private vehicle and driver, hotels and pure-vegetarian breakfast and dinner are included, and our Dehradun team is on call and WhatsApp throughout.

Good to know before you book

Ambaji temple darshan is in three sessions, roughly 8 am to 11:30 am, 12:30 pm to 4:15 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm, with aarti at about 7:30 am and 6:30 pm. Sessions shift with the season and on festival days; we reconfirm before your dates.
Gabbar hill has around 999 steps to the shrine. A ropeway runs most days but is closed for maintenance from time to time; the evening light-and-sound show on the hill was suspended at the time of writing.
Photography is not allowed inside the Ambaji sanctum, and mobile phones must be deposited; lockers are available.
Akshardham at Gandhinagar is closed on Mondays. If your Day 3 falls on a Monday we swap it with a Day 4 site.
Ahmedabad to Ambaji is about 180 km, 4 hours via Mehsana and Palanpur. Abu Road railway station is 20 km from Ambaji if you prefer to arrive there.
The Bhadarvi Poonam fair (full moon of Bhadrapad, usually September) brings over 20 lakh pilgrims to Ambaji on foot; Navratri is also very crowded. October to March is the comfortable season.

Day 1 :

Ahmedabad to Ambaji

Our driver meets you at your arrival point (airport, railway station or hotel) at the agreed time, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport or Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) railway station. We drive north about 180 km (4 hours) via Mehsana and Palanpur, with a tea stop and lunch on your own. The last stretch climbs gently into the Aravalli hills.

Check in at the hotel in Ambaji. In the evening we walk to the temple for your first darshan and the 6:30 pm aarti, when the marble temple and its gold-plated shikhara are lit. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 :

Ambaji temple, Gabbar hill, Kamakshi and Koteshwar

Early morning darshan at Ambaji, ideally for the 7:30 am aarti and the first darshan session, when the queue is shortest. Breakfast at the hotel.

We then drive 4 km to Gabbar hill, the original seat of the goddess, where a lamp is kept burning in a small shrine on the summit. Take the ropeway (extra cost, subject to operation) or, for the fit, the roughly 999 steps; the view of the Ambaji temple across the valley is the reward. Lunch on your own.

In the afternoon we visit the Kamakshi temple complex, which has replicas of all 51 Shakti Peeths arranged around a central shrine, and Koteshwar Mahadev, about 8 km away, where the Saraswati river emerges from the hills beside an ancient Shiva temple and a kund. Return for a second darshan or free time in the bazaar, known for its marble and prasad shops. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 :

Ambaji to Ahmedabad via Akshardham, Gandhinagar

Breakfast and check-out. We drive back south about 160 km (3.5 hours) to Gandhinagar for the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple, a large pink-sandstone complex with exhibitions and gardens; allow 2 to 3 hours, and note it is closed on Mondays. Lunch on your own at the temple's vegetarian food court or in Gandhinagar.

Continue 25 km to Ahmedabad and check in. Evening free to walk on the Sabarmati riverfront. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4 :

Ahmedabad heritage and temples

Breakfast, then a full day in and around the city. We begin at Sabarmati Ashram, where Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1930 and from where the Dandi march began; the museum and his cottage, Hriday Kunj, are open daily. Then 15 km north to the Adalaj stepwell, a five-storey carved vav from 1499. Lunch on your own.

In the afternoon we visit the Hutheesing Jain temple, with its finely carved marble, and the Kalupur Swaminarayan temple, the first temple of the Swaminarayan sampraday, built in 1822 with brightly painted wooden carvings in the old city. Those with energy can walk a stretch of the old pols (gated lanes) near the temple. Dinner at the hotel or, on request, at a traditional Gujarati thali restaurant at your own cost.

Day 5 :

Departure from Ahmedabad

Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. If your flight or train is later in the day, we can add the Jama Masjid and Bhadra Fort area, the Calico Museum (advance booking needed), or the ISKCON temple on the SG Highway.

Drop at your departure point (airport, railway station or hotel), Ahmedabad airport or railway station. The yatra ends here.

Why is there no idol in the Ambaji temple?

The goddess here is worshipped as the Visa Yantra, a sacred diagram inscribed on a marble plate, which only the priests see directly. It is draped and ornamented each day so that devotees in the hall see the form of a seated Devi. Ambaji is one of the few major Shakti Peeths worshipped in this way, and it is one of the 51 places where parts of Sati’s body are said to have fallen; here it is her heart.

Which Ambaji aartis can we attend on this yatra?

With two nights at Ambaji you can attend both aartis. The evening aarti, at about 6:30 pm, falls on Day 1 after the drive from Ahmedabad. The morning aarti, at about 7:30 am, is on Day 2, followed by the first darshan session while queues are short. Timings shift with the season and on festival days, so we reconfirm them before your dates. Mobile phones must be deposited before entry, and lockers are available.

Is the Gabbar hill climb necessary?

No. The shrine on top is small and the main darshan is at the Ambaji temple in town. Pilgrims who are fit enjoy the climb and the view; elderly yatris take the ropeway, which runs most days. When the ropeway is closed for maintenance we visit the base of the hill and the Kamakshi temple instead.

Can we add Mount Abu?

Yes. Mount Abu, with the Dilwara Jain temples and Nakki lake, is about 50 km from Ambaji across the Rajasthan border. Adding one night at Abu between the Ambaji nights and the return to Ahmedabad is a popular variation; ask us for a 5-night quote.

Is this a good yatra for Navratri?

Ambaji during Navratri is unforgettable, with garba in the temple square every night, but it is very crowded, hotel rates double or more, and darshan queues run to several hours. If you want to go then, book two to three months ahead and expect a slower pace. For a calm darshan, come in October after Navratri, or between December and February.

Is Akshardham in Gandhinagar the same as the Delhi one?

Both belong to the BAPS Swaminarayan sampraday, but Gandhinagar’s was built first, in 1992, and is smaller and quieter. It has the main shrine, exhibition halls on Swaminarayan’s life and Indian culture, gardens and a vegetarian food court. It is closed on Mondays, and bags and phones are checked at the gate.

When is the best time to visit?

October to March is pleasant in both Ambaji and Ahmedabad; December and January nights can be cold in the hills. April to June is very hot in Ahmedabad. The Bhadarvi Poonam fair in September and Navratri in September or October are the great festivals at Ambaji, with the crowds that go with them.

What is the food like?

Breakfast and dinner at the hotels are pure vegetarian, mostly Gujarati food. Ambaji is a vegetarian pilgrim town with simple thali eateries for lunch. In Ahmedabad we are happy to point you to a traditional Gujarati thali restaurant one evening at your own cost; Jain food is very easy to find throughout.
