Answer the Divine Call With Mata Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage

3 Days

Highlights & Route

Mata Vaishno Devi’s cave shrine in the Trikuta hills is one of the most visited temples in India, and also one of the simplest to plan around once you know the rhythm of the yatra. This short package does exactly that: we pick you up in Jammu, settle you in Katra for two nights, and keep the whole of the middle day free for the climb, the darshan and the return, so nobody has to rush.

The walk from Katra to the Bhawan is about 12 km each way on a paved, well-lit track with shelters, water points and eateries all along. Most families take four to six hours up and a little less down. Those who do not wish to walk can hire a pony or palki, book the battery car from Adhkuwari, or take the helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat, from where the Bhawan is a short 2.5 km walk. We help you choose the right mix for each member of the family.

Everything else is kept simple: a hotel close to the Katra bus stand and the registration counter, vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and a private vehicle for the Jammu transfers. If your train reaches Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station directly, we can pick you up there instead of Jammu.

Route

Jammu (airport/railway station) → Katra (2 nights) → Bhawan darshan and return → Jammu drop

Good to know before you book

  • Every yatri needs a free Yatra registration (RFID card) from the Shrine Board, issued online at maavaishnodevi.org or at the Katra counters against a photo ID. Entry to the track is not allowed without it.
  • After registration, you must cross the first checkpoint at Banganga within six hours, so collect the card only when you are ready to start walking.
  • Helicopter tickets, battery car seats and Shrine Board accommodation are booked only on the official website. Fake booking sites exist; never pay a third party for these.
  • The battery car runs from Adhkuwari to the Bhawan and is reserved mainly for senior citizens and those unable to walk.
  • Darshan continues round the clock, but it closes briefly for the morning and evening Atka aarti. Queue time varies from under an hour to several hours during Navratri, New Year and summer holidays.
  • Leather items, phones and cameras are not allowed inside the Bhawan; free cloakrooms are available before the entry.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

Darshan at the Bhawan continues almost round the clock. It pauses twice a day, around dawn and dusk, for the Atka aarti, which lasts about two hours; yatris already inside wait, and the queue moves again afterwards. Many experienced yatris prefer to walk up in the late evening and take darshan at night or in the early hours, when the queue is often shorter and the track is cool.

  • Registration: the free RFID yatra card is compulsory for everyone, including helicopter passengers. A helicopter ticket does not replace it and does not give priority darshan.
  • Helicopter fares: the Shrine Board fare between Katra and Sanjichhat was reported at ₹2,320 one way until 31 October 2026, rising to ₹2,700 one way (₹5,400 return) from 1 November 2026. Seats open online about 60 days ahead at 10 am, on the official portal only.
  • Bhairon Nath: by tradition the yatra is complete only after darshan at Bhairon temple, about 2 km above the Bhawan; the ropeway from the Bhawan saves the climb.
  • What not to carry: leather, phones, cameras and electronic items are not allowed past the Bhawan entry. Use the free cloakrooms and keep the locker key on a string.

Festivals to plan around. Chaitra Navratri 2027 runs from 7 to 15 April, and Sharad Navratri falls in September–October. Both, along with New Year week and summer school holidays, bring the heaviest crowds; the Shrine Board may cap daily numbers. In late August 2025 a landslide on the old track near Adhkuwari killed 34 people during heavy rain, and the yatra stayed suspended for about two weeks. We now advise families, especially those with elders, to avoid July–August and to watch Shrine Board advisories before travel.

Is this yatra right for you?

The track is paved, lit and has shelters, so most healthy adults walk it in four to six hours up. The full day of walking about 24 km up and down is the real test. Elders can take a pony, palki or the helicopter for one or both directions, and the battery car from Adhkuwari is reserved mainly for seniors and those unable to walk. Families with toddlers usually hire a pithu (porter) to carry the child.

If you want several Devi darshans rather than one long climb, our Himachal Devi Darshan Yatra from Chandigarh covers six temples by road. Fit yatris with a week to spare can combine the Himachal Devis with a high Himalayan trek on the 7 Devi Darshan with Manimahesh Kailash.

Getting there and nearby tirthas

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station has direct trains from Delhi and other cities, and the line now continues to the Kashmir valley. Jammu airport is about 50 km from Katra. Near Jammu, the Bawe Wali Mata temple inside Bahu Fort and the Raghunath temple complex are easy additions on Day 3; Shiv Khori cave, about three hours from Katra, needs an extra day.
