North India yatra at a glance
A north India yatra covers the great tirthas within a day's drive of Delhi: Haridwar and Rishikesh on the Ganga, Mathura, Vrindavan and the Braj villages of Shri Krishna, Mata Vaishno Devi above Katra, the Devi temples of Himachal, Kurukshetra, Pushkar and the Golden Temple at Amritsar. Most take 3 to 7 days and need little walking. The exceptions are Vaishno Devi (a 12 km climb, with helicopter and battery-car options) and the Kailash Kund trek. October to March suits the plains best. Our Dehradun team plans vehicle, hotels, satvik meals and pandits.
Which north India yatra is right for you?
For a first yatra with elders, start with Haridwar–Rishikesh or a short Mathura–Vrindavan darshan. Devi bhakts can choose Vaishno Devi or the Himachal Shakti Peeths. If your family needs pind daan, the Haridwar yatra keeps the rites at the centre. Kailash Kund is only for fit trekkers. The table lists every yatra in this category, from simplest to most specialist.

When is the best time for a north India yatra?
For the plains of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, October to March is the comfortable season. April to June is very hot, with afternoons above 40°C, so darshan is best done early.
- Vaishno Devi is open all year. Navratri (March–April and September–October), New Year and summer holidays bring the heaviest crowds; winter is cold but quieter.
- Braj is at its most joyful during Holi (February–March), Janmashtami (August–September) and Kartik month (October–November), but those are also the most crowded days. May and June are very hot.
- Haridwar hosts the Kumbh in 2027, from about 14 January to 20 April according to the dates announced so far. Hotels near Har Ki Pauri fill months ahead; see our Haridwar Kumbh 2027 guide.
- Kumaon and Himachal hill temples are best in March–June and September–November. The monsoon (July–September) brings landslides on hill roads.
- Kailash Kund can only be visited from about July to mid-September. The traditional yatra from the Vasuki Nag temple at Bhaderwah is held over three days in August; the 2027 dates are not yet announced.
For festival dates across the year, check our yatra calendar 2027.
How much walking does each north India yatra need?
An honest picture of the effort involved, for families with elders:
| Yatra | Walking involved | Easier option |
|---|---|---|
| Haridwar–Rishikesh, Pind Daan | Short walks through bazaars to the ghats; ghat steps | Ropeway to Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi; cycle-rickshaw to Har Ki Pauri |
| Mathura, Vrindavan, Braj | Narrow lanes; vehicles cannot enter inner Vrindavan, Gokul or Barsana | E-rickshaw for the last stretch |
| Vaishno Devi | About 12 km uphill from Katra to the Bhawan, and the same back | Helicopter to Sanjichhat, pony, palki, battery car from Adhkuwari |
| Himachal Devi temples | Hilltop temples with steps, slow queues | Ropeway at Naina Devi |
| Kurukshetra, Pushkar, Amritsar | Flat ground, temple complexes | Wheelchairs available at major sites |
| Kailash Kund | About 13 km trek each way and two nights in tents | None; this is a true trek |
Vaishno Devi yatra: registration, track and helicopter
Every yatri needs a free RFID yatra card issued by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. You can register online on the Shrine Board website or at the registration counters near Katra bus stand, against a photo ID. Your photo is taken at the counter.
- Collect the card only when you are ready to walk: you must cross the first checkpost at Banganga within six hours of issue, or the card is cancelled.
- Book helicopter tickets, battery car seats and Shrine Board rooms only on the official Shrine Board website. Never pay a third party for these.
- Leave phones, cameras and leather items in the free cloakroom before the Bhawan entry.
- Darshan runs round the clock, pausing briefly for the morning and evening Atka aarti.
On peak days the Shrine Board caps daily registrations, which is why our Vaishno Devi yatra keeps two nights in Katra, so a delay never costs you darshan.
Braj, Vrindavan and the 84 kos parikrama
Braj is the land of Shri Krishna's childhood: Mathura where he was born, Gokul where he grew up, Vrindavan of the raas leela, Govardhan, and Barsana and Nandgaon of Radha Rani and Nand Baba. The Braj Chaurasi Kos parikrama circles roughly 300 km of this sacred country. On foot it takes 30 to 45 days.
Our Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra covers the main leela sites by vehicle in seven days, with Mathura–Vrindavan as the base. It does not follow every step of the padayatra route, and we say so plainly. For a shorter visit, the four-day Mathura Yatra covers Krishna Janmabhoomi, Gokul, Govardhan and a full day in Vrindavan.
Remember that Braj temples follow the deity's daily routine and close for several hours in the afternoon. Banke Bihari, for example, typically opens from about 7:45 am to noon and again from about 5:30 pm in summer, later in winter.
Haridwar, Rishikesh and pind daan
Haridwar is where the Ganga enters the plains, and it is our home ground, about an hour from Dehradun. The evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri begins around sunset, roughly 5:15 to 5:45 pm in winter and 6:45 to 7:15 pm in summer. Our Haridwar Ganga aarti guide explains where to sit with elders.
For pind daan, tarpan and shraddh, families come to the ghats around Har Ki Pauri, Kushavarta Ghat and the Narayani Shila temple. Bring the name, gotra and date of death of the departed; the purohit will ask for them. Pitru Paksha, the fortnight before Sharad Navratri, is the busiest time. If you plan to perform pind daan at Gaya instead, read our Gaya pind daan guide.
Devi temples, gurdwaras and the hills
The Himachal Devi Darshan Yatra covers Naina Devi, Chintpurni, Jwalaji, Baglamukhi, Brajeshwari and Chamunda Devi from Chandigarh in three days. See also our Shakti Peeth yatras and Shakti Peeth guide. In Kumaon, the Kumaon Yatra visits Varahi Devi at Devidhura and the deodar grove of Jageshwar Dham.
At Amritsar, Sri Harmandir Sahib is open to every faith round the clock; cover your head and remove shoes and socks before entering.

Frequently asked questions
Which north India yatra is best for senior citizens?
Haridwar–Rishikesh, Kurukshetra, the short Mathura–Vrindavan yatra and Jaipur–Pushkar are the easiest. They involve flat ground, short drives and no trekking. At Vaishno Devi, elders can use the helicopter to Sanjichhat and the battery car, though some walking remains. We keep one driving stretch a day and choose hotels close to the temples.
Is registration compulsory for Vaishno Devi?
Yes. Every yatri needs a free RFID yatra card from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, issued online or at the counters in Katra against a photo ID. You must cross the Banganga checkpost within six hours of getting it. Anyone found on the track without a card is turned back.
How many days are enough for Mathura and Vrindavan?
Three to four days cover the main temples of Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul and Govardhan without rushing. If you also want Barsana, Nandgaon and the forests of Braj, allow a week. Remember that Braj temples close for several hours each afternoon, so a day holds fewer darshans than you might expect.
Can we do Haridwar pind daan on any day?
Pind daan and tarpan can be performed at Haridwar on any day of the year. Pitru Paksha, Amavasya and the death anniversary are the most common choices. In Pitru Paksha, purohits and hotels near Har Ki Pauri get booked early, so tell us your preferred date as soon as possible.
What is the Kailash Kund yatra and who should do it?
Kailash Kund is a high glacial lake above Bhaderwah in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, sacred to Vasuki Nag and reported at about 14,240 feet. Our version is a 4-day trek with two nights in tents. It suits fit trekkers only, and the season runs from about July to mid-September.
Will the Haridwar Kumbh 2027 affect our yatra?
Yes, if you travel between mid-January and April 2027. Hotels fill up early, roads near the ghats are regulated, and the main snan days draw very large crowds. Book well ahead, or tell us if you would rather avoid snan days. Dates were announced by the mela administration and akharas and can still change.
Tell us your dates, starting city and who is travelling, and we will suggest the right north India yatra with a clear day-by-day plan. Use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us; our numbers are on the Contact page.
