Highlights & Route
High above the Bhaderwah valley in Jammu’s Doda district lies Kailash Kund, a glacial lake at well over 3,800 m that the people of the region revere as the abode of Vasuki Nag, the serpent deity whose ancient temple stands in Bhaderwah town. Every year in late summer a traditional three-day yatra climbs to the lake for a holy dip, and for the rest of the short season the route is open to small groups who want to make the same pilgrimage as a trek. This package is for them.
The plan is compact. A long drive from Jammu brings you to Bhaderwah and on to the Chattergala pass on the Bhaderwah–Basohli road, where the walking begins. A 13 km trail through forest and then open alpine pasture leads to the Seoj Dhar meadows, where we camp for two nights. The second day is the pilgrimage proper: a walk up to Kailash Kund, darshan and a dip for those who wish, and a return to camp. On the third day we walk back to the pass, drive down to Bhaderwah for a hotel night, and return to Jammu on the fourth.
This is a genuine trek, not a sightseeing tour. Daily walking is six to eight hours, nights in tents are cold even in August, and the weather can turn quickly. A trek leader, local guides, cooks and a basic medical kit travel with the group, and we obtain the permits required by the district administration. It suits reasonably fit adults who have done at least one hill walk before; it is not suitable for small children or for yatris with heart, lung or knee problems.
Route
Jammu → Bhaderwah → Chattergala pass (road head) → trek 13 km → Seoj Dhar (2 nights, camp) → Kailash Kund darshan and back → trek 13 km → Chattergala → Bhaderwah (1 night) → Jammu drop
Good to know before you book
- The season is short: roughly July to mid-September. Snow blocks the route for the rest of the year, and the district administration can suspend movement at short notice after heavy rain or cloudbursts.
- The official Kailash Kund yatra from the Vasuki Nag temple is held for three days in August each year on a date fixed by the local committee; those dates bring crowds and sometimes pilgrim limits. We avoid or align with them as you prefer.
- Night temperatures at Seoj Dhar fall to single digits even in summer. Proper warm clothing, rain gear and trekking shoes are essential and are not provided.
- There is no mobile network on most of the route. Inform family in advance; our Bhaderwah contact relays messages.
- Camping is on sharing basis in two or three person tents with sleeping bags and mats. Toilet tents are provided; there are no built facilities on the meadows.
- Meals are simple vegetarian, cooked at camp. Carry your own dry fruits, energy bars and a refillable water bottle.
