Char Dham Yatra from Hyderabad: Flights, Trains & Plan

Quick answer: Hyderabad has a non-stop IndiGo service to Dehradun, so the usual plan is: fly in (about two and a half hours), transfer an hour to Haridwar, and follow an 11-day road circuit of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Allow roughly 13 days from home and back. Without a direct train, rail travel means going via Delhi on the Telangana Express and about 16 days overall. May–mid-June and late September work best.

Updated for the 2027 yatra season (facts checked October 2026)

Hyderabad and Secunderabad send large numbers of yatris to the Himalaya every year, often joint families with grandparents who have waited a lifetime for Kedarnath and Badrinath darshan. The distance is long, but a direct flight to Dehradun has made the journey far easier than it was a decade ago. This page lays out the routes, total days, and the food, language and festival points that matter most to Telugu families.

Hyderabad to the Char Dham: how to travel

Way to travel Time each way Yatra starts at Total days
Direct IndiGo flight to Dehradun Roughly 2.5 hours, plus about 1 hour to Haridwar Haridwar (11 days) About 13

Flight times are approximate. The Secunderabad Rajdhani has run once a week, leaving on Wednesdays; confirm all train days and timings on the IRCTC app before you book.

Flying from Hyderabad

IndiGo lists Hyderabad among its direct destinations from Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport. This is the route we suggest to most Hyderabad families. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad is south of the city, so from Secunderabad or the northern suburbs allow at least an hour and a half to reach it.

  • Land by early afternoon on the first day so that you reach Haridwar with time to rest. If only an evening flight fits, arrive a day early.
  • Fly back the day after the yatra ends. The last day’s drive from Rudraprayag can stretch if there are road works or landslides.
  • Carry medicines in hand baggage, along with one warm layer for the evening.

By train via Delhi

Hyderabad has no regular through train to Haridwar or Dehradun that we could confirm, so rail travellers change at Delhi. Two trains are worth knowing: the Telangana Express, daily from Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) to New Delhi in about 26 hours, and the Secunderabad Rajdhani, a weekly train that reaches Hazrat Nizamuddin in about 22. Our Delhi departure begins with a pickup in Delhi at a point agreed when you book. Book the day the 60-day reservation window opens, and sleep a night in Delhi before setting off for the hills.

Telugu families on the yatra: language and food

Language. People on the route speak Hindi and Garhwali. Most Hyderabad families have at least one member comfortable in Hindi, which makes everything easier; Deccani Hindi is understood perfectly well in Uttarakhand. Our team briefs in Hindi and English. If grandparents speak only Telugu, keep a family member with them at all times on the Kedarnath route and in temple queues.

Food. Hill food is mild north Indian vegetarian: roti, dal, rice, sabzi and curd. Plain rice and curd are available almost everywhere, which helps. Families used to Andhra and Telangana flavours usually carry their own podis, pickles such as avakaya or gongura, and ready-to-eat items. A small steel tiffin and spoon set is useful on long drives.

When should Hyderabad families travel?

  • May to mid-June: school is out and the Deccan is baking, so this is when most Telangana families go. Days in the hills are mild and nights are cold. It is also the peak season, so rooms and helicopter seats go early.
  • Late June to mid-September: Uttarakhand’s rainy season. Roads to Badrinath and Yamunotri are often cut for hours at a time, which is hard on seniors.
  • Second half of September: the rains ease and crowds are thin. Families who want to be home for Bathukamma and Dasara (Vijayadashami falls on 9 October 2027) often choose these weeks.
  • After Dasara: the fortnight after 9 October 2027 brings crisp, settled weather and short queues, but freezing nights. With Diwali on 29 October and Bhai Dooj soon after, the season is close to its end.

A note for Shiva devotees: Kartika masam begins just after Diwali, when Kedarnath is about to close for the winter. If you would like Kedarnath darshan in an auspicious month, the Vaishakha and Jyeshtha months (roughly May and June) fall within the season.

As of October 2026, no 2027 opening date has been set. A May yatra can be pencilled in now and confirmed once the announcements come, in mid-February for Badrinath and early March for Kedarnath. See our best time for Char Dham guide and Yatra Calendar 2027.

Health: from the Deccan to 3,583 metres

Hyderabad is at about 500 metres. Kedarnath is about 3,583 metres and Badrinath about 3,133 metres. The thinner air is felt most by elders and by anyone with heart, lung, blood pressure or sugar conditions. See a doctor a month before the yatra, walk daily to build stamina, and plan a pony, palki or helicopter at Kedarnath for anyone who cannot climb about 16 km. Carry proper woollens; Hyderabad winters do not prepare you for Kedarnath nights. Our senior citizen guide and packing list help.

Registration and Kedarnath helicopter

Registration is mandatory for every member of the family, including children, and costs nothing. Send us copies of everyone’s photo ID and we help you file it; each person receives a QR-coded letter. In 2026 the online window opened on 6 March. If a grandparent will take the Kedarnath helicopter, the IRCTC HeliYatra booking can only be made after that registration exists. See our registration guide and helicopter booking guide.

What it costs

The road yatra from Haridwar is priced from ₹50,000 per person for 11 days, and the helicopter version from Dehradun from ₹2,22,000 per person for 6 days. Neither includes flights from Hyderabad. With the road package, also keep money aside for lunch, a pony or palki, the Sonprayag shuttle, any helicopter ticket, puja, insurance and GST.

How we can help

Many Hyderabad families travel as three generations together, so we plan the Kedarnath day first, deciding who walks, who rides and who flies, and build the rest of the itinerary around it. Most families take the 11-day road yatra from Haridwar after flying into Dehradun; rail travellers join the 12-day yatra from Delhi. Where long drives would tire grandparents, the helicopter yatra is worth a look. Compare all Char Dham yatras. Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight from Hyderabad to Dehradun?

Yes, on IndiGo, which includes Hyderabad in its non-stop network from Jolly Grant. Expect about two and a half hours in the air. Shamshabad is a long drive from Secunderabad, so leave home early. On landing, Haridwar is about an hour away by road. Timetables shift between seasons, so book only after checking the current one.

Which train goes from Hyderabad towards the Char Dham?

There is no regular direct train to Haridwar that we could confirm. The daily 12723 Telangana Express runs from Hyderabad Deccan to New Delhi in about 26 hours, and the weekly 12437 Secunderabad Rajdhani reaches Hazrat Nizamuddin in about 22 hours. From Delhi, you can join our 12-day Char Dham yatra.

How many days does the Char Dham Yatra from Hyderabad take?

Flying both ways, roughly 13 days: the yatra itself is 11 days from Haridwar, plus a travel day at each end that is mostly spent in Uttarakhand anyway. Rail via Delhi stretches it to about 16. Pairing the flights with our 6-day helicopter Char Dham from Dehradun brings it down to around 8 days. Keep one spare day if your ticket is rigid.

Our grandparents speak only Telugu. Is that a problem?

It is manageable. Hindi is spoken throughout the route, and our team briefs in Hindi and English. Keep a Hindi-speaking family member with the grandparents, especially at Kedarnath and in temple queues. Write their medical conditions and medicines in English on a card, and save our number on every phone in the group.

Will we find food that suits a Telugu palate?

The food is mild north Indian vegetarian, but rice and curd are easy to find, which helps. Most Hyderabad families carry podis, pickles such as avakaya or gongura, and a few ready-to-eat items for the long drive days. Spicier food is easier to find in Haridwar and Rishikesh than in the hills.

When should Hyderabad families plan the yatra around Dasara?

Vijayadashami falls on 9 October 2027, with Bathukamma in the days before. Families who want to be home for the festival usually travel in the second half of September, when the monsoon has eased. Others go between about 10 and 22 October, after Dasara, finishing before Diwali on 29 October, as the dhams close soon after.

Is the helicopter Char Dham suitable for elderly parents?

Often, yes. It avoids most long drives and the 16 km Kedarnath walk, and our 6-day helicopter yatra includes a palki or pony for Yamunotri. It still reaches high altitude, so a doctor’s clearance is wise. Body-weight limits apply, and weather can delay flights and add a night, so keep your return flexible.
