Highlights & Route

For yatris who cannot spare a week, or whose parents should not spend a night at altitude, a helicopter turns Muktinath into a morning’s work. The charter lifts off from Kathmandu soon after sunrise, crosses the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and lands on the helipad just below the temple at about 3,700 m. You have roughly an hour for the bath at the 108 spouts, darshan of Lord Muktinath and the Jwala Mai shrine before flying back, usually with a refuelling stop at Pokhara or Jomsom, to be in Kathmandu by lunchtime.

The two nights in Kathmandu are not wasted. The arrival evening takes in Budhanilkantha’s reclining Vishnu and the Sandhya Aarti at Pashupatinath on the Bagmati, so that the yatra begins at Nepal’s holiest Shiva temple and ends, the next morning, at its holiest Vishnu shrine. The final day is a relaxed checkout and airport transfer.

Helicopters carry up to five passengers within strict weight limits, so the price is quoted for the group and the yatra suits a family or close friends travelling together. Because the ground time at altitude is short, it is also the gentlest Muktinath option for elderly pilgrims, provided their heart and lungs are healthy.

Route

Kathmandu airport → Hotel → Budhanilkantha → Pashupatinath (aarti) → Kathmandu → (refuel Pokhara/Jomsom) → Muktinath helipad → Muktinath temple → Kathmandu → Kathmandu airport

Good to know before you book

  • Price on request, quoted per charter; it depends on passenger numbers and total weight.
  • Flying time is about 1 to 1.5 hours each way with a fuel stop; total door-to-door about 4 to 5 hours. Departure is early because Mustang winds build after 10 am.
  • Ground time at Muktinath is about one hour. The temple is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the helipad with some steps.
  • Charters fly only in clear weather; the operator decides at dawn and we keep the next morning as fallback.
  • Best months: October to November and March to May. Winter mornings are clear but very cold at the temple.
  • Passport or voter ID for adults is needed for the flight manifest; Aadhaar only for under-15s and over-65s.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

With about an hour on the ground, the order of rituals at Muktinath matters. Our coordinator follows the traditional sequence: a quick bath or sprinkle under the 108 Mukti Dhara spouts behind the temple, a dip in the two kunds in front of it, darshan of Lord Muktinath (Shri Vishnu) in the pagoda-roofed shrine, and then the Jwala Mai temple, where a small natural flame burns beside flowing water. Keep wet clothes in a plastic bag and change before darshan.

  • Divya Desam and Shakti Peeth: Muktinath is counted among the 108 Divya Desams (as Saligramam) and is also regarded as a Shakti Peeth. Many Sri Vaishnava families recite the pasurams of the Alvars here.
  • Permit: Muktinath lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. An ACAP entry permit is required; in 2026 the fee for SAARC nationals, including Indians, is NPR 1,000, and permits issued at checkpoints cost double. We arrange it with the charter.
  • Best time of day: as early as possible. Strong winds funnel up the Kali Gandaki valley from late morning, which is why charters leave Kathmandu soon after sunrise.
  • Offerings: tulasi, flowers and a small deep; shaligram stones are sold in Jomsom and around the temple, but buy only from shops, never from the riverbed.
  • Pashupatinath: the Day 1 Sandhya Aarti on the Bagmati is held after the inner gates reopen in the evening (about 6 pm in winter, 7 pm in other seasons). Indians enter free.

Seasons. October–November and March–May have the steadiest weather. December–February mornings are clear but the water at the spouts is close to freezing and snow can cover the steps. The monsoon months (June–September) bring cloud over the passes and frequent cancellations.

Is this yatra right for you?

This is the gentlest Muktinath option for elderly parents, because the body spends only about an hour at 3,700 m and sleeps in Kathmandu. Still, there are steps from the helipad to the temple, about 130 by most counts, and the air is thin; a doli can be hired for those who cannot climb. Anyone with heart or lung disease should take medical advice first.

The charter suits a family or small group sharing the cost. If you are travelling as a couple or prefer a slower yatra with a night near the dham, choose our Muktinath Dham Yatra from Nepalgunj or the Gorakhpur Muktinath Dham route by flight and jeep. Read our Muktinath yatra guide for documents and altitude care.
