Quick answer: Mahakal Bhasma Aarti in Ujjain can be booked only online, on the temple committee’s official website (shrimahakaleshwar.com) or its app. The fee is Rs 200 per person. Since April 2026 there is no offline counter: advance bookings open about one month ahead, and a tatkal quota opens at 8 am one day before. Carry the original photo ID used while booking and follow the dress code.
Updated for the 2027 yatra season (facts checked October 2026)
The Bhasma Aarti of Shri Mahakaleshwar, the south-facing Jyotirlinga of Ujjain, is held before dawn every day. The linga is adorned with sacred ash, and for many devotees seeing it once is the purpose of the whole yatra. Seats are limited and the rules changed in 2026, so a lot of the advice still circulating online is out of date. This guide sets out the current process, the dress and ID rules, and the practical tips we give the families we take to Ujjain.
What changed in Bhasma Aarti booking in 2026?
In April 2026 the Mahakaleshwar temple management committee changed the booking system. As reported by Navbharat Live on 15 April 2026:
- Offline permission ended on 9 April 2026. The counter where devotees queued for hours for a free slip has closed.
- The offline seats became an online tatkal quota. About 300 permissions that were earlier given free at the counter are now booked online, at Rs 200 per person.
- Tatkal opens at 8 am one day before the aarti date, first come, first served.
- The advance window was cut from three months to about one month. As reported, bookings for a month open at the start of the previous month (for example, June dates open on 1 May).
- Sandhya and Shayan aarti also moved online, at Rs 250 per person, with bookings opening at 12 noon and 4 pm respectively.
The committee can change these windows again, so read the notice on the official site before you plan. If anything in this guide differs from the official site, the official site is right.
How to book Mahakal Bhasma Aarti online, step by step
- Go only to the official channel: shrimahakaleshwar.com or the official Shri Mahakaleshwar app. Ignore sponsored search results and WhatsApp offers that promise “confirmed Bhasma Aarti”.
- Register with a mobile number you will have with you, and log in before the window opens.
- Select Bhasma Aarti and your date. For advance booking, be online when the month’s window opens. For tatkal, be ready at 8 am the day before.
- Enter each devotee’s details: name, age, gender, mobile and photo ID number, exactly as on the ID. Some guides report that a photo upload is also needed.
- Pay Rs 200 per person online and download the permission. Print it, because phones may not be allowed inside.
- On the night, reach the entry gate named on the permission at the reporting time printed on it, with the same original ID.
Permissions are issued in each devotee’s own name and verified against the ID at entry. This is why no hotel, priest or yatra company can genuinely “sell” you a seat. What a good organiser can do is sit with you while you book on the official portal, and plan the rest of your Ujjain stay around the date you get.

What if you do not get a Bhasma Aarti booking?
Many yatris do not, especially on Mondays, in Shravan or around Mahashivratri. You still have good options:
- Try tatkal at 8 am the day before. Keep a day spare in Ujjain so you can try twice.
- Chalit darshan. Reports say the temple allows devotees without a permission to file past and see the Bhasma Aarti in a moving queue on many days. Ask at the temple the evening before, since the arrangement depends on the crowd.
- Book the Sandhya or Shayan aarti online instead.
- Quick darshan in the day. A paid fast-track darshan ticket of about Rs 250 per person is reported for regular hours.
- Puja in your name. If you cannot be in Ujjain at all, a priest can perform a Rudrabhishek in the pre-dawn hours of the aarti on your behalf. This is a puja in its spirit, not a seat inside.
What are the daily aarti timings at Mahakaleshwar?
The temple’s timings shift slightly with the season, but the order of the day stays the same.
| Aarti | Approximate time | Booking |
|---|---|---|
| Bhasma Aarti | About 4 to 6 am | Online, Rs 200 per person |
| Morning (naivedya) aarti | About 7 to 7:30 am | Not usually |
| Bhog aarti | About 10 to 10:30 am | Not usually |
| Sandhya aarti | About 5 to 5:30 pm (later in summer) | Online, Rs 250 per person |
| Shayan aarti | About 10:30 to 11 pm | Online, Rs 250 per person |
Treat these as a guide only. Use the timings printed on your booking and the temple’s notice board.
Practical tips for the night of the Bhasma Aarti
- Stay close. Choose a hotel or dharamshala within walking distance of the temple or Mahakal Lok. You will leave in the middle of the night.
- Sleep early. Have dinner by 8 pm and set two alarms.
- Dress at the hotel. Men should carry or wear a dhoti and a shawl; women a saree. Nights in Ujjain are cold from November to February.
- Carry only essentials: original ID, printed permission, a little cash, and a cloth bag for prasad. Leave phones, belts and big bags behind.
- Elderly yatris: the wait can be long and you may sit on the floor. Bring a light cushion if allowed and take medicines before leaving.
- After the aarti, rest, then visit Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth, Kaal Bhairav and Ram Ghat on the Shipra. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga on the Narmada can be visited in a day from Ujjain.
How to reach Ujjain and Mahakaleshwar
- By air: the nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport, Indore, about 55 to 60 km away (around 1.5 hours by road).
- By train: Ujjain Junction is about 2 km from the temple and is well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bhopal.
- Inside Ujjain: e-rickshaws and autos reach the Mahakal Lok entrance; the final stretch is on foot.
When is the best time to attend Bhasma Aarti?
October to March is the most comfortable weather. Mondays, Shravan and Bhadrapada (when the Mahakal Sawari processions take place on Mondays), Nag Panchami, Mahashivratri and New Year draw the largest crowds and the hardest bookings. In 2027 Mahashivratri falls on 6 March and the Shravan month in north India begins around 19 July, according to the panchang. Weekday dates outside these periods give you the best chance. Our Yatra Calendar 2027 lists other dates.
What we arrange
Our Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga yatra (2 nights, 3 days, Indore or Ujjain pickup) is built around the Bhasma Aarti date you secure: we help you register on the official portal in your own name, keep a stay close to the temple, and add Harsiddhi, Kaal Bhairav and a day at Omkareshwar. The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga yatra covers both Jyotirlingas of Madhya Pradesh. For those who cannot travel, see Mahakaleshwar puja with Bhasma Aarti sankalp (online), explained honestly: it is a puja in your name, not a seat. See all our Jyotirlinga yatras and the 12 Jyotirlinga list. To plan dates, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
Frequently asked questions
Can I book Mahakal Bhasma Aarti offline at the temple?
No, not any more. The temple committee ended offline permission on 9 April 2026 and converted those seats into an online tatkal quota. All Bhasma Aarti permissions are now booked on shrimahakaleshwar.com or the official app, in each devotee’s own name, at Rs 200 per person. Check the official site for any later change.
How many days in advance can I book Bhasma Aarti?
As reported in April 2026, the advance window was reduced from three months to about one month, with each month’s dates opening at the start of the previous month. A separate tatkal quota opens at 8 am one day before the aarti date. Both fill very quickly, so be logged in before the window opens.
Can a travel agent or hotel book Bhasma Aarti for me?
Permissions are issued in each devotee’s own name and checked against the original photo ID at entry, so no agent, hotel or priest can sell you a confirmed seat. Treat anyone promising one for a fee with great caution. A genuine organiser can only help you book on the official portal yourself and plan your stay around the date.
What is the dress code for Bhasma Aarti?
Men are expected to wear a dhoti or unstitched sola, and women a saree, especially for entering close to the sanctum or offering jal. Some sources say women may wear a salwar suit when only viewing. Avoid jeans and western wear. Carry a shawl in winter, as the wait before dawn can be cold.
What ID do I need for Bhasma Aarti?
Carry the original of the same photo ID you entered while booking, such as Aadhaar, passport or voter ID, for every person on the permission. A photocopy or a photo on your phone may not be accepted, and phones may have to be deposited anyway. Also carry a printed copy of the permission.
Can women attend the Mahakal Bhasma Aarti?
Yes. Women attend the Bhasma Aarti and book in the same way as men. They should wear a saree for entry close to the sanctum. Some local customs are observed during the moment the bhasma is offered; temple staff guide devotees on the spot, so follow their instructions calmly.
What if I miss my Bhasma Aarti reporting time?
Entry closes once the reporting window is over, and the booking is generally lost. Stay within walking distance of the temple, leave earlier than you think you need to, and keep your ID and printed permission ready the night before. If you miss it, try the next day’s tatkal quota or join chalit darshan if it is open.
Is there a free way to see Bhasma Aarti?
The free offline counter closed in April 2026. Reports say devotees without a permission can sometimes see the aarti through chalit (moving-queue) darshan, depending on the crowd. For a seat inside, the online Rs 200 permission is the only route, so if you are flexible, keep a spare day in Ujjain and try the tatkal quota.
