Shrikhand Mahadev is counted among the Panch Kailash and is the toughest Shiva pilgrimage inside India that does not need a passport. The object of worship is a natural rock pinnacle around 72 feet high on a ridge of the Great Himalayan range in Kullu district, at an altitude of roughly 5,200 metres. Devotees from Himachal, Punjab and Haryana walk to it during a short official window in July, chanting as they climb through meadows, moraine and old snow.
This seven-day plan from Chandigarh follows the traditional route from Jaon village in the Nirmand area. After the registration and medical check at Singhgad, the trail rises to the camp at Thachru, climbs over Kali Ghati to Bhim Dwar and Parvati Bagh, and on the fourth morning makes the final push past the glacial lake of Nain Sarovar to the Shivling. The descent is spread over two days with a last night in Rampur Bushahr before the drive back. A trek leader, kitchen staff, tents, oxygen and a medical kit travel with the group, and all meals on the yatra are vegetarian.
The yatra is controlled by the Kullu district administration, which fixes the dates, runs online registration and sets up base camps, medical posts and rescue teams along the route. In 2026 the window was announced as 10 to 23 July but the administration cancelled the yatra shortly before it began after an inspection found the stretch between Bhim Dwar and Parvati Bagh unsafe. Whether and when the 2027 yatra runs will depend on the administration’s notification, which usually comes in June, and we will take bookings subject to it.

Good to know before you book
- About 32 km of walking each way from Jaon, with camps above 3,400 metres for four nights and a summit day that crosses boulder fields and snow patches at over 5,000 metres.
- Registration with the Kullu administration and a medical check at the Singhgad base camp are compulsory; no one is permitted beyond Singhgad without them. We assist with both.
- The yatra runs only during the official window, normally about two weeks in July, which falls in the monsoon. Expect rain daily.
- Porters are hired at Jaon at rates fixed locally and paid directly; book one if you are not used to carrying a rucksack.
- There is no phone network beyond Jaon and no shops after Thachru other than langar tents run by sevadars during the yatra.
- The administration can close the route at any time for weather or safety, as it did in 2026. Keep your travel plans flexible.
