Kinnaur Kailash Darshan Yatra (Panch Kailash)

Highlights & Route

Kinnaur Kailash, or Kinner Kailash, is one of the Panch Kailash, the five mountains revered as abodes of Lord Shiva. On a shoulder of the mountain, high above the Sutlej valley in Himachal’s Kinnaur district, stands a natural rock pillar some 79 feet tall that devotees worship as a Shivling. It is said to change colour through the day as the light moves across it. Reaching it means a hard climb of roughly 2,500 metres from Tangling village, and the yatra is open for only about two weeks each year when the district administration declares the route safe.

Our five-day plan from Shimla is designed around that short window. The first day is the drive to Tangling, a village across the Sutlej from Reckong Peo. Two days of climbing bring you through Ganesh Park and the stone shelter known as Gufa to a high camp. On the fourth day you climb to Parvati Kund and the Shivling for darshan and return down to camp, and on the final day you walk out and drive back to Shimla. A trek leader, kitchen staff, tents and oxygen for emergencies travel with the group.

In 2026 the Kinnaur district administration ran the yatra from 30 July to 15 August with registration compulsory and a daily quota of 375 pilgrims, including a share for registered tour operators. A medical fitness certificate, an undertaking and a small green tax were required at the Tangling counter before anyone was allowed to start. The 2027 dates and rules will be notified by the administration in the weeks before the season, and we will adjust departures to match them.

Good to know before you book

• The Shivling stands at close to 4,800 metres and the climb from Tangling (about 2,300 metres) is steep and rocky; this is a strenuous high-altitude trek, not a temple walk.
• Registration with the Kinnaur district administration is mandatory and limited by a daily quota. We register the group through the operator quota or online slot and complete the counter formalities at Tangling with you.
• A medical fitness certificate from a registered doctor is compulsory. You can obtain it at home or at the medical camp set up at Tangling.
• Trekking at night is not allowed; the administration asks pilgrims to stay on the marked route and move in groups.
• Nights are in tents at altitude where temperatures fall near freezing even in August. Rain gear is essential as the yatra runs during the monsoon.
• There is no phone network above Tangling, and the nearest hospital is at Reckong Peo.
