About this puja

Kaal Sarp Dosh is a yoga in the birth chart in which all the planets lie between Rahu and Ketu, the two shadow planets that tradition pictures as the serpent. Astrologers link it to repeated obstacles, delays in marriage or career, worry, bad dreams and a feeling that effort does not bear fruit. The Kaal Sarp Shanti puja is a one-day ritual in which Rahu, Ketu and the Nag devatas are propitiated, a silver or copper serpent image is worshipped and then given away, and Shiva is asked to free the person from the serpent’s hold.

Trimbakeshwar, at the foot of the Brahmagiri hill near Nashik where the Godavari rises, is held to be the right place for this puja. The Jyotirlinga here has three small faces for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and the Kushavarta kund in the town is treated as the source of the Godavari and the place where the yajman bathes before the ritual. Trimbakeshwar is known across India for Narayan Nagbali, Kaal Sarp Shanti and Tripindi shraddha. By long custom, these pujas are performed by the town’s hereditary purohit families, who hold copper-plate (tamrapatra) rights, at Kushavarta or at the purohit’s own puja place, not inside the temple sanctum.

How the online puja works: you send the name, gotra and birth details of the person with the dosh. Our purohit takes sankalp in that name with Kushavarta water, performs the Kaal Sarp Shanti with the Nag puja, Rudra abhishek and havan, and completes the daan. You receive a video of the sankalp and the main puja, or a live link, and the prasad with your sankalp sheet is couriered to your Indian address.

Who performs it

The puja is performed by a Trimbakeshwar purohit from one of the town’s traditional tamrapatra-holding families, with whom we have a long working relationship. He is a local, temple-associated priest; he is not an employee of Shri Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust, and we do not claim that this service is run by or on behalf of the temple trust.

Good to know before you book

  • The temple trust’s own online puja booking covers Rudrabhishek and Laghurudra only, through its official website. Kaal Sarp Shanti is not a trust-run ritual anywhere; it has always been done by the town’s purohits outside the sanctum, which is how we arrange it too.
  • Kaal Sarp Shanti is a one-day puja, usually finished in a single morning sitting of a few hours. It should not be confused with Narayan Nagbali, a separate three-day ritual also done at Trimbakeshwar, which we can arrange on request.
  • The dosh is identified from the birth chart, so we need the person’s date, time and place of birth. If you have a horoscope or an astrologer’s note, send a photo of it. If you are unsure whether the dosh exists, the purohit can check the chart first.
  • Nag Panchami (in Shravan), Shravan Mondays, Amavasya and Mahashivratri are traditionally preferred, and dates around them fill early. The puja can be done on other days as fixed by the purohit’s muhurat.
  • The serpent image, grains and cloth used in the puja are given as daan at Trimbakeshwar in your name; they are not sent to you. Prasad (bhasma, a raksha sutra, dry prasad and the sankalp sheet) is couriered within India.
  • Trimbakeshwar is very crowded in Shravan and during the Nashik-Trimbak Kumbh. Online puja continues on those days, but videos may be shorter and courier dispatch a little slower.
