Highlights & Route
Haridwar and Rishikesh sit barely 25 km apart on the Ganga, yet they feel like two different worlds. Haridwar is an old pilgrim town of bathing ghats, crowded lanes and temples on hilltops. Rishikesh, a little upstream where the river leaves the mountains, is a town of ashrams, suspension bridges and evening satsangs. This short yatra gives you a night in each, so that you see both at their best hours: dawn and dusk.
You arrive in Haridwar, take the ropeway up to Mansa Devi, cross to Chandi Devi, and in the evening sit at Har Ki Pauri for the Ganga Aarti. The next morning you move to Rishikesh for Bharat Mandir, the two famous jhulas across the river and the Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan, which has a quieter, more musical character. The last morning is left free before you are dropped back at Haridwar.
This is one of our easiest packages. There is no long driving, the walking is on flat ghats and market lanes, and the pace suits elderly parents, small children and first-time visitors to Uttarakhand. It also works well as a two-day add-on before or after a Char Dham or Kedarnath yatra.
Route
Haridwar (1 night) → Rishikesh (1 night) → Haridwar railway station or Dehradun airport
Good to know before you book
- The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, about 35 km from Haridwar and 20 km from Rishikesh. Pickup and drop from the airport can be arranged in place of Haridwar station.
- The old Laxman Jhula bridge has been closed to walkers since 2019 for safety; you see it from the bank and cross the river on Ram Jhula or the newer Janki Setu.
- Ganga Aarti timings at Har Ki Pauri and Parmarth Niketan shift with the sunset, roughly 5.30 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer. We check the day’s timing locally.
- Ropeway tickets at Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi are paid on the spot. Both temples are also reachable by stepped footpaths.
- Haridwar and Rishikesh are vegetarian towns; alcohol and non-vegetarian food are not available in hotels.
- Weekends and long holidays bring heavy traffic from Delhi. If your dates are flexible, choose weekdays.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
The Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri is held at Brahmakund every evening at sunset, roughly 5.30 pm in winter and close to 7 pm in summer, and again at dawn. For a good place on the steps, arrive 45 minutes early; on weekends the ghat fills an hour before. In Rishikesh the Parmarth Niketan aarti also starts at sunset, and the Triveni Ghat aarti is a quieter alternative on the town side.
- Snan: bathe only at ghats with chains and hold them; the current at Har Ki Pauri is fast even in winter. Changing rooms are available.
- Sankalp and puja: priests at Brahmakund can perform a short Ganga puja and sankalp; families also record visits with their hereditary pandas, who keep genealogy registers by district.
- Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi: ropeways run from morning to evening with a break around midday on some days; queues are long on Sundays and in Navratri.
- Neelkanth Mahadev: about 30 km by road above Rishikesh; Mondays in Sawan are extremely crowded.
Festivals to plan around: the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027 runs from 14 January to about 20 April 2027. Announced bathing days include Makar Sankranti (14 January), Mauni Amavasya (6 February), Basant Panchami (11 February), Magh Purnima (20 February), Mahashivratri (6 March, Amrit snan), Phalgun Amavasya (8 March, Amrit snan), Nav Samvatsar (7 April), Mesh Sankranti (14 April, Amrit snan) and Chaitra Purnima (20 April). Expect traffic controls, walking-only zones and much higher hotel rates on and around these dates. The Kanwar Yatra in Sawan (July–August) also closes roads for days.
Is this yatra right for you?
This is one of our easiest yatras: plains altitude, short drives, flat ghats and ropeways for the two hill temples. Senior citizens, small children and wheelchair users with a helper can manage it. It is a good add-on before or after a Char Dham yatra, since Haridwar is where most hill journeys begin.
Choose differently if your main purpose is a shraddh ritual. Our Delhi Haridwar Pind Daan Yatra (2N/3D from Delhi) keeps a full morning for pind daan and tarpan with a purohit. If you want to bathe in the Ardh Kumbh, tell us your preferred snan day as early as possible; we may suggest staying in Rishikesh and travelling in before dawn. For senior parents planning the hills afterwards, read our Char Dham guide for senior citizens. To plan dates, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
Getting there and nearby tirthas
Haridwar junction has direct trains from Delhi (about 4.5 hours by the faster trains) and most north Indian cities; Jolly Grant airport at Dehradun is about 35 km from Haridwar. Within the town, Daksh Prajapati temple at Kankhal marks the site of Daksh’s yagna and the story of Sati. In Rishikesh, Kunjapuri Devi, one of the Siddhapeeths of Garhwal, is a sunrise viewpoint about 25 km away. Hindi readers can see our चार धाम यात्रा page for the onward hill yatra.
