Highlights & Route
The Andaman Islands are India’s own tropical sea, a thousand kilometres east of the mainland, with coral reefs, white beaches and a history that every Indian should see once: the Cellular Jail at Port Blair, where the freedom fighters of the Kala Pani were held. This eight-day programme is the full circuit. It covers Port Blair and its islands, two nights on Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) for its famous beaches, a night on the quieter Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), and a long day trip to Baratang in the north for limestone caves and the mud volcano.
The order is built around ferry timings and the sea. Port Blair comes first with Corbyn’s Cove, the Cellular Jail and its evening light-and-sound show, and a boat day to Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep), the ruined British capital, and North Bay for coral viewing. Then the catamaran to Havelock: Kalapathar beach, Radhanagar beach at sunset, and a boat to Elephant Beach for snorkelling over the reef. Neil Island follows, with the Natural Bridge rock formation at low tide and the Laxmanpur and Bharatpur beaches. The return to Port Blair leaves a day for the museums and a final early start to Baratang through the Jarawa tribal reserve by convoy.
Indian citizens need no permit anywhere on this route. Hotels are chosen for sea views and vegetarian kitchens where possible, and breakfast and dinner are included throughout. Water sports at Elephant Beach and North Bay (scuba introduction, sea walk, jet ski) are left optional so that each family member chooses; everything else, including all ferries, the Cellular Jail show and the Baratang boats, is arranged and paid in advance. For a shorter visit, see our six-day Andaman programme.
Route
Port Blair (2 nights) → Ross Island and North Bay → ferry to Havelock / Swaraj Dweep (2 nights) → Elephant Beach → ferry to Neil Island / Shaheed Dweep (1 night) → ferry to Port Blair (2 nights) → Baratang day trip → Port Blair airport
Good to know before you book
- Indian citizens need no permit for Port Blair, Havelock, Neil or Baratang. Foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), issued free on arrival at Port Blair airport for most nationalities; citizens of a few countries need prior clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Carry a government photo ID; it is checked on every ferry.
- Island hopping is by ferry: government vessels are cheaper but book out weeks ahead, private catamarans (about 90 minutes to Havelock, about an hour between Havelock and Neil) are quicker and air-conditioned. Sailings are cancelled in rough weather and we re-plan the day when that happens; the cost of any extra night is not covered.
- The season is October to May, with the calmest seas and clearest water from December to March. The south-west monsoon from late May to September brings heavy rain and frequent ferry cancellations. Sunset is early, around 5 to 5.30 pm, so days start early.
- Baratang is reached by road through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in a timed police convoy (the first leaves Port Blair around 6 am, so the day begins about 4 am). Photography, stopping or any contact with the tribal people is a criminal offence, and the vehicle windows stay closed in the reserve.
- Port Blair is officially named Sri Vijaya Puram (since 2024), Havelock is Swaraj Dweep, Neil is Shaheed Dweep and Ross Island is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep; tickets and signboards use both names.
- Flights to Port Blair (Veer Savarkar International Airport) are not included; there are direct flights from Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Mobile coverage is patchy outside Port Blair and internet is slow on the outer islands.
