About this puja

Rudrabhishek is the ritual bathing of the Shivalinga with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee and other offerings while the Rudra mantras from the Yajurveda are recited. Families perform it for health, for relief from a long illness or fear, for peace at home, and simply as a way of thanking Mahadev. This online puja is for yatris who cannot make the climb to Kedarnath themselves: elderly parents, families settled abroad, or anyone whose dates do not match the short temple season.

Kedarnath, at about 3,580 metres in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the most important of the Panch Kedar. The linga here is a natural rock, worshipped as the hump of Shiva in his bull form from the Mahabharata story. The temple opens in late April or May and closes for winter on Bhai Dooj, after which the deity’s utsav doli moves to Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath, where the winter worship continues.

How our online puja works: you tell us the names, gotra and intention of the family members the puja is for. On the agreed date our priest at the Dham takes the sankalp in your name, performs the Rudrabhishek with the full samagri and recites the Rudra path. You receive a short video of the sankalp and of the puja wherever filming is permitted, and prasad is sent to your address by courier. During the winter months the same puja is performed at Omkareshwar temple, Ukhimath, the winter seat of Kedarnath.

Who performs it

The puja is performed by local priests from the Kedar valley whom we have worked with over many seasons. We are a yatra company in Dehradun, not the temple committee, and we make no claim of official temple status. The sanctum rituals at Kedarnath are done only by the temple’s own Rawal and pujaris under the Shri Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC); if you would like an official BKTC puja ticket in your name as well, we can arrange it for you and the temple’s charge is passed on without mark-up.

Good to know before you book

  • Kedarnath temple opened on 22 April 2026 and is scheduled to close for winter on Bhai Dooj, 11 November 2026. From then until the next opening the puja is performed at Omkareshwar temple, Ukhimath.
  • Mobile phones, photography and videography are banned inside Kedarnath temple. The video you receive therefore covers the sankalp and the abhishek performed outside the sanctum, not footage from inside the garbhagriha.
  • BKTC’s own puja bookings are made on its official portal and need registration with an Indian mobile number. If you want one, tell us at the time of booking so we can plan the date accordingly.
  • Weather in the high Himalaya can delay a puja by a day; if that happens we inform you and perform it on the next clear day, or refund in full if you prefer.
  • Prasad courier within India is included. Addresses outside India can be served at extra cost, subject to what that country allows in.
  • We will ask for names and gotra in writing; please double-check spellings, because the priest reads them exactly as sent.
