Highlights & Route

Kurukshetra needs no introduction to any Indian family. This is the field where the Mahabharata war was fought and where Shri Krishna gave the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna under a banyan tree at Jyotisar. It is also, less famously, a Shakti Peeth: the Devikoop Bhadrakali temple marks the spot where Sati’s right ankle fell into a well, and it is here that the Pandavas are said to have prayed before the battle and offered horses in thanks after it. Krishna and Balram’s mundan is also traditionally placed at this temple.

Our three-day package gives you two unhurried nights in Kurukshetra, just 155 km up the highway from Delhi. Day 2 covers the main circuit: morning darshan at Bhadrakali, the great tank of Brahma Sarovar, Sannihit Sarovar where the seven Saraswatis are said to meet, the Sthaneshwar Mahadev temple where the Pandavas worshipped Shiva, Jyotisar with its banyan and the evening light-and-sound show, Bhishma Kund at Narkatari, and the Shri Krishna Museum and Panorama that bring the epic alive for children.

You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with pickup and drop in Delhi, stay in a comfortable Kurukshetra hotel with vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and have our Dehradun coordinator on call. The itinerary suits three generations travelling together: short drives, flat ground and plenty of places to sit and listen to the stories.

Route

Delhi → Kurukshetra (Brahma Sarovar evening) → Devikoop Bhadrakali Shakti Peeth → Brahma Sarovar → Sannihit Sarovar → Sthaneshwar Mahadev → Jyotisar → Bhishma Kund → Shri Krishna Museum and Panorama → Kurukshetra → Delhi

Good to know before you book

  • Kurukshetra is about 155 km from Delhi on NH44, roughly 3.5 hours; it is also an easy 4–5 hour drive from Dehradun via Saharanpur, so we can start the yatra from Dehradun on request.
  • Bhadrakali temple opens about 6 am to 8 pm in summer and 6:15 am to 7:30 pm in winter; mundan ceremonies for children can be arranged here with prior notice.
  • The International Gita Mahotsav is held at Brahma Sarovar every year around Gita Jayanti (November–December); it is festive and crowded, so book early for those dates.
  • The Jyotisar light-and-sound show and the Panorama have fixed timings and weekly closures; we check them for your dates.
  • Solar eclipses draw lakhs of pilgrims to bathe at Brahma Sarovar; avoid eclipse dates unless that is your purpose.
  • October to March is the comfortable season; May–June is very hot on the plains.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

Kurukshetra is a town of sarovars and open-air tirthas, so light and weather decide the best order more than temple hours do. Devikoop Bhadrakali opens at about 6 am and closes at about 8 pm in summer (7:30 pm in winter). Brahma Sarovar and Sannihit Sarovar are open ghats; the evening aarti at Brahma Sarovar is held around sunset and is worth reaching 20 minutes early for a place on the steps.

  • Bhadrakali offerings: devotees offer small clay, silver or gold horses after a wish is fulfilled, following the Pandavas’ offering after the war. Mundan for children is done here with prior notice; carry the child’s name and gotra.
  • Snan at the sarovars: Somvati Amavasya and solar eclipses draw very large crowds to Brahma Sarovar and Sannihit Sarovar for a holy bath. Sannihit is also used for pind daan and tarpan; a local purohit can be arranged.
  • Best time of day: Bhadrakali and the sarovars in the morning, Jyotisar in the late afternoon when the banyan’s shade is long and the evening show follows.
  • Weekly closures: the Krishna Museum and Panorama keep a weekly off day; we arrange Day 2 around them for your dates.

Festivals to plan around. Gita Jayanti (Mokshada Ekadashi) falls on 20 December 2026. The International Gita Mahotsav at Brahma Sarovar runs for about two to three weeks around it; in 2025 the Gita Maha Aarti ran from 15 November to 5 December. Haryana announces the 2026 programme dates closer to the event, and we will share them when you enquire. The fair, cultural stalls and the lit sarovar are a joy for families, but hotels fill early.

Is this yatra right for you?

This is among our easiest yatras: flat ground, short drives and benches everywhere. It suits grandparents, young children and anyone who wants the Gita’s story told at the very places it happened. The only physical point is the ghat steps if you bathe; use the chains and go with a companion.

It is less suited to families who want many temples with long darshan queues, or a Krishna yatra focused on his childhood. For that, our Mathura–Vrindavan yatra from Delhi covers Braj in four days, and the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra takes a week. If you are coming from Uttarakhand and want a Ganga darshan too, combine Kurukshetra with our Haridwar Rishikesh yatra, since both are close to Dehradun.

The 48-kos Kurukshetra bhoomi

Tradition says the dharmakshetra is not just the town but a land of 48 kos around it, dotted with tirthas linked to the Mahabharata, the Vamana Purana and the Pandavas. Our standard plan covers the main sites in one relaxed day. Yatris with more time can ask for an extra day to visit outer tirthas, and we will plan it with you.

Getting there and nearby tirthas

  • Pehowa (Prithudak): about 27 km west, on the Saraswati. It is one of North India’s old places for shraddh and pind daan, especially for family members who died suddenly, and many families keep their genealogy records with the pandas here. Add a half-day if this matters to you.
  • Kurukshetra station is on the Delhi–Ambala line, with frequent trains from Delhi. By road it is about 155 km from Delhi on NH44.
  • From Dehradun the drive via Saharanpur takes four to five hours; we can start the yatra from Dehradun on request.

Yatra Highlights

  • Darshan at the Devikoop Bhadrakali Shakti Peeth
  • Jyotisar, where the Bhagavad Gita was spoken
