Highlights & Route
Somnath is named first in every list of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple stands on the Saurashtra shore at Prabhas Patan with nothing but sea between it and the South Pole, a fact marked by the Baan Stambh arrow pillar on the boundary wall. Destroyed and rebuilt many times over a thousand years, the present temple was completed in 1951 and is now the centre of a well-run pilgrim complex with a seafront promenade.
This short yatra keeps you two nights at Somnath so that you see the temple at its best times: the evening aarti at 7 pm followed by the light-and-sound show on the temple walls, and the quiet morning aarti at 7 am. The second day covers the places tied to Krishna’s last days in this very area: Bhalka Tirth, where the hunter’s arrow struck him, and Dehotsarg at the Triveni Sangam, where the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati rivers meet the sea and where he is believed to have left his body. The old Somnath temple built by Ahilyabai Holkar, Geeta Mandir and Lakshminarayan temple are close by.
Pickup is from Veraval railway station, 7 km from the temple, or from Diu airport about two hours away; Rajkot airport is a longer option. The plan is unhurried and flat, which suits elderly parents and children. We provide the private vehicle, hotel and pure-vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and our Dehradun team is reachable by phone and WhatsApp throughout.
