Highlights & Route
Ujjain is one of the seven Mokshapuri cities, and Mahakaleshwar is the only Jyotirlinga that faces south, the direction of Yama. Pilgrims come here for the Bhasma Aarti, the pre-dawn ritual in which the lingam is adorned with sacred ash, and for the sense that time itself is worshipped on the banks of the Shipra. This 3-day plan gives you two nights in the city so that the aarti, the main darshan and the surrounding temples can all be done without hurry.
Day 1 covers Ujjain itself: Mahakaleshwar and the new Mahakal Lok corridor, the Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth next door, Kaal Bhairav, and the evening aarti at Ram Ghat on the Shipra. Day 2 is a full-day drive to Omkareshwar, about 140 km south, where a second Jyotirlinga stands on an island shaped like the sacred syllable Om in the Narmada. You return to Ujjain for the night so that the last morning is free for Bhasma Aarti if you have a pass.
Bhasma Aarti passes are issued only by the temple committee through its own website and app, 30 days in advance, and they run out quickly. We register for you the day the window opens, but we cannot guarantee a pass. Everything else, from the hotel to the driver to the pure-veg meals, is handled by us, and our Dehradun office stays in touch by phone and WhatsApp throughout.
Route
Indore airport or Ujjain railway station → Ujjain (Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi, Kaal Bhairav, Ram Ghat) → Omkareshwar day visit (Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga) → Ujjain (optional Bhasma Aarti) → Indore airport or Ujjain railway station
Good to know before you book
- Bhasma Aarti runs roughly 4 am to 6 am, with reporting at the temple between about 1 am and 2 am. Passes cost Rs 200 per person and are booked only on shrimahakaleshwar.com or the Shri Mahakal app, 30 days ahead at 8 am, with a small same-day quota opening a day before. There is no offline counter and no agent quota.
- Dress code for Bhasma Aarti: men wear a dhoti or sola (unstitched cloth), women wear a saree. Each person must carry the original photo ID used at registration.
- The general darshan queue at Mahakaleshwar is free and usually takes 30 to 90 minutes; a paid Rs 250 shighra darshan line is available.
- Omkareshwar is a long day: about 3.5 to 4 hours each way. We leave by 7 am. Elderly yatris can skip the 7 km island parikrama and use the road bridge instead of the boat.
- Indore airport is about 55 km (1.5 hours) from Ujjain; Ujjain Junction is in the city. Both work as pickup points.
- Summer (April to June) is very hot in Malwa; October to March is the best season. Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri bring very large crowds and the committee changes aarti rules at short notice.
