Highlights & Route
For most Indian families the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a dream that stays out of reach: two weeks or more, a Chinese visa, altitudes above 5,000 m and a parikrama that tests even the fit. The aerial darshan offers another way to see the mountain. A chartered aircraft flies from Nepalgunj in western Nepal along the Nepal side of the border and, in clear weather, Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are seen through the windows across the Tibetan plateau. The aircraft never crosses the border, so no visa is needed.
Our programme runs over three days from Lucknow. On the first day you drive to Nepalgunj, about 180 km across the border, visit the Bageshwari temple for a group havan and attend the flight briefing. The second morning is the flight itself, about an hour in the air with a window seat for every yatri, and prayers and chanting led by a pandit on board. The rest of that day and night are kept free at Nepalgunj so that a weather delay or a second attempt does not break the plan. On the third day you drive back to Lucknow.
This darshan suits elderly yatris, people with health conditions that rule out altitude, and families who want to include children and grandparents together. There is no high-altitude exposure, no trekking and no visa paperwork; a valid Indian passport or voter ID is all that is needed to enter Nepal. Please remember that a mountain view depends on the weather, and that an aerial darshan is a distant view of the peak and lake rather than a visit to them.
Route
Lucknow → Nepalgunj → chartered flight along the Nepal-Tibet border for Kailash and Mansarovar darshan → Nepalgunj → Lucknow
Good to know before you book
- Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal but must carry an original passport or Election Commission voter ID. Children travel on their own passport or school ID with a birth certificate; please check with us.
- The aircraft stays in Nepalese airspace and does not land anywhere near Kailash. The peak is seen from a distance across the border.
- Flights operate in the clear-weather months, generally May to June and September to October. Early morning departures give the best visibility.
- Seats are allocated in the order of booking. Every booking in this package includes a window seat.
- Carry Indian 100-rupee notes or Nepali currency for small purchases; higher-value Indian notes are not accepted in Nepal.
- Keep your onward travel from Lucknow flexible by half a day, since a flight postponed by weather is attempted the next morning.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
Kailash aerial flights from Nepalgunj are chartered jet flights of about an hour. The first such flight, in early 2024, flew at around 27,000 feet along Nepal’s north-western border in Humla, from where Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are visible across the plateau. Departures are in the early morning, when visibility is best; a delay of an hour or two for weather is normal.
- Havan and sankalp: our pandit conducts a group havan at the Bageshwari temple on Day 1, so that you take the darshan with sankalp already made.
- On board: chanting of Om Namah Shivaya or the Shiv Panchakshar stotra is led during the darshan minutes. Keep cameras secondary; the view lasts only a short time on each side.
- Bageshwari temple: Nepalgunj’s main Shakti shrine, open from early morning to evening; it is busy on Tuesdays and Saturdays and in Dashain.
Seasons and dates: clear-weather months are generally May–June and September–October. Maha Shivaratri (6 March 2027) and Buddha Purnima (May, the Saga Dawa full moon at Kailash) are popular dates; flights on such days depend on weather and charters. The 2027 calendar has not been announced.
Is this yatra right for you?
This is the gentlest way to have Kailash darshan: no altitude on the ground, no walking beyond the temple visit, no Chinese visa and no parikrama. It suits senior citizens, people with heart or lung conditions that rule out Tibet, and families travelling with children. You need a passport or voter ID for Nepal.
Be clear about what it is: a distant view through an aircraft window. You will not touch Mansarovar, take a dip, or stand before the mountain. If that matters, consider the options below; the road-and-helicopter yatras need a Chinese group visa and, after the MEA advisory of June 2026, we do not start any Tibet yatra until visas and permits are in hand.
