This Do Dham yatra covers the two shrines most families want to visit when time is short: Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and Badrinath, the abode of Lord Vishnu. The whole yatra runs by road from Haridwar and back over 5 nights and 6 days, with only the final climb to Kedarnath done on foot, by pony or by palki.

We plan the days so that nobody is rushed. You stay one night right at Kedarnath, which lets you attend the evening aarti and go for darshan again early next morning when the queues are usually lighter. At Badrinath you have time for a dip in Tapt Kund, darshan at the temple and a short visit to Mana village before heading back down the valley.

The road follows the Ganga upstream past Devprayag and Rudraprayag, where rivers meet, and then climbs along the Mandakini and Alaknanda valleys. Hill drives are long, so we keep halts at Guptkashi and Rudraprayag or Srinagar to break the journey into manageable stretches for elderly yatris.

Your group travels in a private vehicle with a driver who knows these mountain roads, stays in clean hotels on a twin or triple sharing basis, and gets pure vegetarian breakfast and dinner every day. Our team in Dehradun stays in touch throughout and helps with registration, the Kedarnath trek arrangements and any change in plans due to weather.

Good to know before you book

Yatra registration with the Uttarakhand government is compulsory for every pilgrim. It is free and done online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or through the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. We can help you complete it.
The walk from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 16 km one way and takes most people 6 to 8 hours. Ponies and palkis can be hired locally; helicopter seats are sold only through the official IRCTC Heli Yatra portal and are not part of this package.
Kedarnath stands at about 3,580 m and Badrinath at about 3,133 m. Nights are cold even in summer, so warm clothing is essential.
The temples open in late April or May and close for winter around October–November. The 2027 opening dates will be added here as soon as the temple committee announces them.
Monsoon months (roughly July to mid-September) bring landslides and road blocks on this route. May–June and late September–October are usually the smoothest windows.
Government rules ban vehicle movement on hill roads late at night, so our drive timings are planned around this.

Day 1 :

Haridwar to Guptkashi

Our driver meets you at your arrival point (airport, railway station or hotel) at the agreed time in Haridwar. The drive climbs into the hills along the Ganga, with a short stop at Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet to form the Ganga, and later at Rudraprayag, the meeting point of the Alaknanda and Mandakini. This is a long day on the road, so keep water, snacks and any travel-sickness medicine handy. Check in at the hotel by evening, have dinner and rest well for the trek tomorrow.

Overnight: Guptkashi (or Sitapur, depending on availability)

Day 2 :

Guptkashi to Kedarnath (trek)

Leave very early after a light breakfast for Sonprayag, where yatra registration is checked. From here shared local taxis run the last few kilometres to Gaurikund, the start of the walking route. The path to Kedarnath is about 16 km and climbs steadily; walk at your own pace, rest often and drink water regularly. Those who prefer can hire a pony or palki at Gaurikund (charges are paid directly and are not included). On reaching Kedarnath, check in, warm up and attend the evening aarti if you feel well.

Day 3 :

Kedarnath darshan and return to Guptkashi

Wake early for darshan of Kedarnath ji, when the lines are often shorter. If time and energy allow, you can also visit the Bhairavnath temple on the ridge above the town and the Adi Shankaracharya samadhi behind the main temple. After breakfast, begin the walk back down to Gaurikund, then take the shared taxi to Sonprayag, where your vehicle will be waiting. Drive back to the hotel for a well-earned rest.

Day 4 :

Guptkashi to Badrinath

After breakfast, set off on the drive to Badrinath. The road crosses over to the Alaknanda valley and passes through Chamoli and Joshimath; the final 45 km from Joshimath is narrow and can be slow, so we start in good time. On arrival, check in and freshen up. In the evening, bathe in the warm waters of Tapt Kund and go for darshan of Shri Badrinarayan, staying on for the evening aarti.

Day 5 :

Badrinath and Mana to Rudraprayag / Srinagar

An early morning darshan is a peaceful way to start the day for those who wish to go again. Families who want to perform pind daan for their ancestors can do so at Brahma Kapal on the bank of the Alaknanda (pandit charges are separate). Then drive about 4 km to Mana village, known as the last Indian village on this road, to see Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and Bhim Pul. After lunch at your own cost, start the drive down the valley.

Overnight: Rudraprayag or Srinagar (Garhwal)

Day 6 :

Rudraprayag / Srinagar to Haridwar

After breakfast, drive back to the plains along the Alaknanda and the Ganga, passing Devprayag once more. Depending on your onward plan, we drop you at your departure point (airport, railway station or hotel) in Haridwar (railway station, bus stand or hotel) or at Rishikesh. Please book onward trains or flights for the evening or the next day, as hill road timings can change at short notice.

How many days are needed for Kedarnath and Badrinath yatra by road?

From Haridwar, 5 nights and 6 days is a comfortable plan. It includes one night at Kedarnath, one night at Badrinath and halts in between so that the long hill drives are split sensibly. Shorter plans are possible but leave little margin for road delays or tiredness after the trek.

Is registration compulsory for Kedarnath and Badrinath?

Yes. Every pilgrim must register with the Uttarakhand government before the yatra, either on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or on the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. Registration is checked at points such as Sonprayag. Our team helps you fill it in once your dates are fixed. The tourist care helpline is 1364 (toll-free).

How long is the Kedarnath trek and can elderly people do it?

The walking route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 16 km one way and usually takes 6 to 8 hours going up. Many elderly yatris manage it slowly with rest breaks, but those with knee, heart or breathing problems are better off hiring a pony or palki, or booking a helicopter seat. Please consult your doctor before deciding.

Can I add a helicopter ride to Kedarnath in this package?

Yes, you can combine this road package with a helicopter seat for Kedarnath. Tickets for the Kedarnath shuttle are sold only on the official IRCTC Heli Yatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in), so you must book them in your own name with your own ID. Tell us your heli date and we will adjust the road plan around it. Beware of anyone selling Kedarnath heli tickets outside the official portal.

What is the best time for Do Dham yatra?

The temples usually open in late April or May and close for winter around October–November. May, June and the period after the monsoon (late September to October) generally have the best weather and roads. July and August bring heavy rain and frequent landslides. We will publish the 2027 opening dates as soon as they are officially announced.

What kind of hotels and food are included?

You stay in clean hotels or guesthouses on twin or triple sharing, with pure vegetarian breakfast and dinner daily. At Kedarnath, rooms are basic camps or guesthouses because of the location. Lunch is not included, so you can eat on the way wherever the group prefers.

Can the yatra start from Dehradun or Rishikesh instead of Haridwar?

Yes. Pickup and drop can be arranged from Dehradun railway station, Jolly Grant airport or Rishikesh as well. The route and number of days stay the same; tell us your arrival details when you enquire.
