Highlights & Route
This seven-day plan adds the two things the five-day tour cannot fit: a wildlife stop at Kaziranga and a proper night or two in Cherrapunji itself. Kaziranga National Park on the Brahmaputra floodplain holds the world’s largest population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, and an early-morning jeep safari through its tall grass is one of the great wildlife experiences in India. Elephant, wild buffalo, swamp deer and a remarkable number of birds are seen on most drives.
From Kaziranga the road climbs to Shillong and then on to Cherrapunji (Sohra), where you stay two nights rather than making a day trip. That gives you a full day for the walk to the double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat, a descent of roughly 3,000 stone steps through betel-nut forest to a village where Khasi families have trained the roots of rubber fig trees into two bridges stacked one above the other. It is a real trek, but one that fit yatris of all ages complete every day, and the shorter single root bridge at Riwai is an alternative for those who prefer it.
The last two days bring you back through Dawki and Mawlynnong to Shillong, and finally to Guwahati for darshan at Kamakhya before your flight. The sequence puts the hardest day in the middle, with easier days on either side, and keeps the temple visit for the end, when the group is relaxed and the hills are behind you.
Route

Good to know before you book
- Kaziranga is open to visitors from early October to around May; it reopened for the 2026-27 season on 3 October 2026 and closes for the monsoon. Jeep safaris run in morning and afternoon slots from the Kohora (central), Bagori (western) and Agaratoli (eastern) ranges.
- Indian citizens need no permit for Assam or Meghalaya; foreign nationals register their passports at the Dawki checkpost.
- The Nongriat trek is about 3,000 steps down and the same back up, taking four to six hours in all. It is not suitable for anyone with knee or heart problems; they can do the Riwai single root bridge instead.
- November to March gives dry paths, clear water at Dawki and the best wildlife sightings. April and May are warm and humid; June to September is monsoon.
- Elephant-back safaris at Kaziranga are limited and booked by the forest department; they cannot be guaranteed.
- Mobile signal is weak in Nongriat and parts of Cherrapunji.
