Highlights & Route
The Kathmandu Valley packs seven UNESCO World Heritage monument zones and the holiest Shiva temple in Nepal into an area you can cross in an hour. This 3-night programme lets a family see the main pilgrimage sites and the medieval squares at a relaxed pace, from a single hotel, without the early flights and altitude of the Muktinath and Everest routes.
Day 1 is kept light for arrival and Budhanilkantha. Day 2 is the heart of the yatra: Pashupatinath in the morning while the inner gates are open, then Boudhanath’s great white dome, the hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath with its views over the city, and the carved palaces and Krishna Mandir of Patan Durbar Square. Those who wish can begin the day with a one-hour mountain flight along the Himalaya that passes Everest; it is included in the package price and flies only in clear morning weather.
Day 3 is deliberately unscheduled. Shop for singing bowls and pashmina in Thamel, return to a temple that moved you, or take an optional trip to Bhaktapur. The programme ends with an airport transfer on Day 4.
Route
Kathmandu airport → Budhanilkantha → (Everest mountain flight) → Pashupatinath → Boudhanath → Swayambhunath → Patan Durbar Square → Thamel → Kathmandu airport
Good to know before you book
- Price on request, per person on twin-sharing in a three-star hotel.
- The mountain flight departs around 6.15 am and lasts about an hour; if the airline cancels for weather it refunds the fare, which we pass on to you.
- Indians enter Pashupatinath free. Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and Patan charge SAARC-rate entry tickets at the gate, paid directly.
- October to November and March to April give the clearest skies; December and January mornings are cold but usually clear.
- Passport or voter ID is a must for adults; Aadhaar only for under-15s and over-65s.
- Meals are vegetarian breakfast and dinner at the hotel; lunch is on your own.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
Pashupatinath is open roughly from 4 am to 9 pm, but the inner gates of the main temple close around 2 pm and reopen for the evening (about 6 pm in winter, 7 pm the rest of the year). That is why our Day 2 begins at Pashupatinath in the morning. Indians and Nepalis enter free; the main sanctum is for Hindus only, and the evening aarti on the Bagmati can be watched by everyone from the eastern bank.
- Busy days: Mondays, Ekadashi and Pradosh are busier at Pashupatinath. Arrive before 8 am for a calmer darshan.
- Dress and conduct: modest clothes, no leather inside the temple courtyard, shoes left at the stands. Photography is not allowed inside the main courtyard; the cremation ghats should be photographed with respect, if at all.
- Stupas: walk clockwise around Boudhanath and Swayambhunath and turn the prayer wheels with the right hand. Swayambhunath has a long stone stairway at the front; our driver can use the road to the upper car park for elders.
- Budhanilkantha: the reclining Vishnu is seen from the edge of the pond; only priests step onto the image.
Festivals to plan around. Maha Shivaratri (early March 2027) brings very large crowds and sadhus to Pashupatinath, with roads closed around the temple. Teej (August–September) fills the temple with women devotees in red. Dashain and Tihar (October–November) are Nepal’s biggest holidays, when hotels and flights are full. If you want festival darshan, book early and expect slow movement.
Is this yatra right for you?
This is the gentlest way to see Nepal’s holy places: one hotel, short drives, no altitude and a free day. It suits senior citizens, young children and first-time travellers abroad. The main limits are documents (adults need a passport or voter ID, not Aadhaar) and the early start for the optional mountain flight.
If you have only one night, our Kathmandu Mandir Darshan city day covers Pashupatinath, Budhanilkantha and Boudhanath. If you want the Himalaya close up and the lakes, choose our Kathmandu and Pokhara yatra. If Muktinath is on your sankalp, the Muktinath and Pashupatinath yatra covers both in seven days; read our Muktinath yatra guide first.
