Highlights & Route
Puri is the eastern dham of the Bada Char Dham, home to Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra in a twelfth-century temple whose flag is changed by hand on the tower every evening. This compact programme gives you two nights in Puri with time for darshan twice, the famous Mahaprasad from the temple kitchen, and a half-day excursion to the Sun Temple at Konark, a UNESCO World Heritage site about 35 km up the coast.
You arrive at Bhubaneswar by air or train and are driven the 60 km to Puri in about an hour and a half. The first evening is for darshan at the temple and the Bada Danda, the broad street where the Rath Yatra chariots roll each year. The second day begins with early darshan before the crowds, then Konark, the Chandrabhaga beach and an evening on Puri’s own Golden Beach. The third morning you return to Bhubaneswar, with time for the Lingaraj temple if your train or flight allows.
The vehicle is private to your group, hotels are within easy reach of the temple and the sea, and breakfast and dinner are vegetarian. Puri has firm temple rules, explained below, and our team briefs you on them before you travel.
Route
Bhubaneswar → Puri → Jagannath temple → Konark Sun Temple → Chandrabhaga beach → Puri Golden Beach → Bhubaneswar
Good to know before you book
- Entry to the Jagannath temple is for Hindus only; this rule is strictly applied at the gates.
- Mobile phones are completely banned inside the temple since January 2023, along with cameras, leather items and umbrellas. Deposit counters operate near the Singhadwar (Lion Gate).
- Mahaprasad, cooked in earthen pots in the temple kitchen, is sold at Ananda Bazar inside the complex; eating it is part of the pilgrimage.
- Konark Sun Temple is an ASI monument with a ticketed entry, payable at the gate; it is a ruin you walk around rather than a working temple.
- October to February is the pleasant season. Rath Yatra (June–July) brings lakhs of pilgrims, road closures and hotel surcharges; tell us if that is your aim.
- The price shown is per person on sharing basis for a standard group and changes with group size and hotel category.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
The Jagannath temple day begins with the opening of the doors at about 4.30 am and the Mangala Alati at about 5.30 am, and the last ritual, Pahuda, is usually close to midnight. Darshan is free and needs no booking, but it pauses several times a day while bhog is offered, so the exact gaps vary. In our experience the first hour after Mangala Alati and the late evening after the Sandhya Alati are the calmest times to stand before the three deities.
- Dress code: since 1 January 2024 the temple administration requires decent clothing. Shorts, half pants, torn jeans, skirts and sleeveless dresses are refused. Men are comfortable in dhoti or kurta-pyjama, women in saree or salwar kameez.
- Not allowed inside: phones, cameras, leather items and umbrellas; pan and gutkha are fined; plastic is banned on the premises.
- Mahaprasad: buy it at Ananda Bazar inside the complex and eat it there, seated, as is the custom. Families often carry dry nirmalya home as prasad.
- Flag change: the evening change of the Patitapabana bana on the Neela Chakra is best watched from the outer courtyard or the Bada Danda.
Festivals to plan around: the temple administration has announced Rath Yatra for 5 July 2027, with Bahuda Yatra on 13 July, Suna Besha on 14 July and Niladri Bije on 16 July. During Snana Purnima and the fortnight of Anasara before Rath Yatra the deities are not seen in the sanctum, so a darshan-focused visit in June needs care. Kartik month (October–November) and New Year week are also very busy.
Is this yatra right for you?
Choose this three-day programme if you want Jagannath darshan twice, Mahaprasad and Konark without long road days. Puri is at sea level, walking is on flat stone floors, and there are no climbs, so it suits senior citizens and young children. The main effort is standing barefoot in a crowd inside the inner enclosure; wheelchair users should tell us in advance so we can plan the least crowded hour.
It is not the right choice if any member of your group is not a Hindu (they cannot enter, and the rule is enforced), or if you also want the Shakti Peeth at Jajpur, Chilika or the Bhubaneswar temples at leisure. For those, a longer Odisha yatra fits better. If your real aim is the chariot festival, enquire early: Rath Yatra week brings road closures and non-refundable hotel advances. To plan your dates, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).

Getting there and nearby tirthas
Bhubaneswar has the nearest airport, about 60 km from Puri; Puri has its own railway station with direct trains from Delhi, Kolkata and other cities. Close to Puri, the Gundicha temple (the destination of the chariots), Lokanath Shiva temple and the samadhi of Haridas Thakur can be added to Day 2. On the way back, Sakshigopal temple lies on the Puri–Bhubaneswar road; by tradition a Puri yatra is completed with darshan there.
Yatra Highlights
