Quick answer: Gaya pind daan is the shraddh offering of rice or barley pindas and water (tarpan) for one’s ancestors at Gaya Ji in Bihar. The core rite takes one day at three places: the Falgu river, the Vishnupad temple and the Akshayavat. Longer rites cover more vedis over 3 to 17 days. It can be done on any day of the year; Pitru Paksha in 2027 runs from about 15 to 29 September.
Updated for the 2027 yatra season (facts checked October 2026)
Of all the places where Hindus perform shraddh, Gaya holds a unique place. The Puranas say a shraddh done here gives lasting peace to the departed, and families travel from every corner of India and abroad, often once in a lifetime, to do it for their parents and forefathers. In May 2025 the Bihar government renamed the city Gaya Ji, the name pilgrims have long used. This guide explains the process, the vedis, how long each option takes, the 2027 dates and what to prepare, from the point of view of an organiser who takes families there.
What is pind daan, and why Gaya?
Pind daan is the offering of pindas, small balls of cooked rice or barley flour mixed with black sesame, honey, ghee and milk, to the departed. Tarpan is the offering of water with sesame and kusha grass. Together with the feeding of Brahmins and daan, they make up shraddh.
Tradition links Gaya to the demon Gayasur, on whose body Vishnu placed his foot; the footprint is worshipped at the Vishnupad temple. The Ramayana tradition also holds that Sita offered pindas of sand to King Dasharatha on the bank of the Falgu, remembered at Sita Kund. That is why Gaya is called the foremost tirtha for ancestors, and why its shraddh is thought to complete what other shraddhs cannot.
Which are the main pind daan vedis in Gaya?
A vedi is a place where pindas are offered. Tradition speaks of a very large number of vedis around Gaya. Bihar Tourism currently lists 48 major vedis and sacred sites used for pind daan. Your purohit will choose which ones to cover depending on the length of the rite and your family’s custom.
| Vedi or site | Where | What is done there |
|---|---|---|
| Falgu river | East side of the city, below Vishnupad | Sankalp, snan or achaman, tarpan and pind daan. Since 2022 a rubber dam near Vishnupad holds water in this stretch through the year. |
| Vishnupad temple | On the Falgu bank | Pindas offered at the footprint of Vishnu; the Brahma pad, Rudra pad and Vishnu pad are counted among its altars |
| Akshayavat | Near Vishnupad | The “undying banyan”; the rite is completed here and the purohit gives the blessing (suphal) |
| Sita Kund | Opposite bank of the Falgu | Pindas of sand, recalling Sita’s offering |
| Pretshila | Hill about 8 to 10 km from the city | Shraddh for those who died untimely; Brahma Kund at the foot of the hill |
| Ramshila | Hill on the south-east side of the city | Pindas before the hilltop temple, where Shri Ram is believed to have offered pinda |
| Punpun river | Near Patna, on the way to Gaya | In some family traditions, the first pinda is offered here before reaching Gaya |
How long does Gaya pind daan take: 1, 3, 7 or 17 days?
Purohits in Gaya offer rites of different lengths. There is no single “correct” length; families follow their own custom and the time they have.
| Option | Vedis covered | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| One day | Falgu, Vishnupad and Akshayavat | Most families, elderly yatris, NRIs on a short visit |
| Three days | The core three plus Pretshila, Ramshila and a few others | Families who want a fuller rite without a long stay |
| Seven days | A wider circuit of vedis | Those following a family tradition of a longer shraddh |
| 15 to 17 days | The full set of vedis, one group each day through Pitru Paksha | Families with a long-standing vow; mostly done in Pitru Paksha |
A rite done in one day at the three main places is complete in itself. The longer options are a matter of tradition and devotion, not a requirement.
The process of Gaya pind daan, step by step
- Meet your purohit (panda). Families traditionally go to the panda who serves their region or clan; many pandas keep registers of the families they have served. If you do not have one, a trusted organiser can arrange an experienced purohit.
- Mundan and snan. In many families the son performing the rite has his head shaved before shraddh. Customs differ; follow your family’s practice.
- Sankalp at the Falgu. You state your name, gotra and the names of the departed, and the purpose of the rite.
- Tarpan with water, black sesame and kusha for each generation.
- Pind daan: pindas offered for the paternal line, the maternal line and other departed relatives you name.
- Vishnupad: pindas offered at the footprint of Vishnu.
- Akshayavat: the final pindas, daan and the purohit’s blessing that the shraddh is complete.
- Brahman bhojan and daan, as your family wishes.
The one-day rite usually takes four to six hours, starting in the morning. Shraddh is traditionally offered in the daytime, ideally before the early afternoon.
What should you bring for pind daan in Gaya?
- A written list of the departed with their relation to you, for the father’s and mother’s lines up to three generations where you know them
- Your gotra, and the date or tithi of death of the main person if known
- Plain, simple clothes; many men wear a white dhoti for the rite. Carry a change of clothes and a towel
- Photo ID for hotel check-in and travel
- Cash for dakshina and daan, since small payments at the vedis are common
You do not need to bring samagri. The purohit arranges rice or barley flour, sesame, kusha, flowers and everything else locally.
Pitru Paksha 2027 dates and the Gaya mela
Pitru Paksha is the fortnight of the ancestors: the dark half of Ashwin in the north Indian (purnimant) calendar, called the dark half of Bhadrapada in the amant calendar. By the panchang for New Delhi, Pitru Paksha 2027 begins with Purnima shraddh on 15 September 2027 and ends with Sarva Pitru Amavasya on 29 September 2027. Some calendars start the count from Pratipada on 16 September.
The Bihar government holds the Pitru Paksha Mela in Gaya Ji every year. In 2026 it ran from 25 September to 10 October, with a tent city, help desks and the district’s “Pinddaan Gaya Ji” app and website for vedis, routes, stays and emergency numbers. The dates of the 2027 mela have not yet been announced; they normally follow the panchang and are notified a few months ahead.
If your dates are flexible, consider an ordinary day outside Pitru Paksha. The rite is equally complete, the vedis are quieter, the purohit has more time for you, and hotels are easier to find. Families remembering a particular parent often choose the death tithi or an Amavasya.
Who can perform pind daan in Gaya?
Tradition gives the duty to the son, but it has always allowed others when needed. Daughters, wives, grandsons, brothers and other relatives perform pind daan in Gaya, and the purohits there do this regularly. What matters is the shraddha (faith) of the person taking the sankalp.
Can pind daan be done online?
Yes, a purohit can perform the rite in Gaya on your behalf with a sankalp in your name. Bihar Tourism has also listed an e-pind daan package. Be aware that some of the Gaya panda community objects to online pind daan on religious grounds. If you choose it, ask exactly which vedis will be covered, whether you can watch live, and what prasad and record you will receive. Our online puja guide explains how proxy sankalp works.
How to reach Gaya and where to stay
- By air: Gaya airport has flights from Delhi, Kolkata and other cities, and is about 10 to 12 km from Vishnupad.
- By train: Gaya Junction is on the Delhi to Kolkata main line.
- By road: Bodh Gaya is about 12 to 15 km away; Varanasi is roughly 250 km, a 5 to 6 hour drive; Patna is about 100 km.
- Stay: hotels near Vishnupad save time but are basic; Bodh Gaya has more comfortable options. In Pitru Paksha, book months ahead.

Frequently asked questions
Is pind daan in Gaya only done during Pitru Paksha?
No. Pitru Paksha is the most auspicious and the busiest time, but Gaya shraddh is performed on every day of the year. The death tithi of the departed, any Amavasya, or simply a date that suits your family are all accepted. A rite on an ordinary day is complete in every sense and usually far less crowded.
What are the Pitru Paksha 2027 dates?
By the panchang for New Delhi, Pitru Paksha 2027 runs from Purnima shraddh on 15 September 2027 to Sarva Pitru Amavasya on 29 September 2027; some calendars begin the count on 16 September. The Bihar government had not announced the 2027 Gaya mela dates when this guide was checked in October 2026.
How many vedis are there in Gaya?
Tradition speaks of a very large number of vedis around Gaya, and Bihar Tourism currently lists 48 major vedis and sacred sites for pind daan. Most families perform the rite at three of them, the Falgu, Vishnupad and Akshayavat, in one day. Longer rites add Pretshila, Ramshila, Sita Kund and others.
Can a daughter perform pind daan in Gaya?
Yes. The tradition favours a son, but daughters, wives and other relatives have always been allowed to perform shraddh when needed, and Gaya purohits conduct it for them regularly. The sankalp is taken in the name of the person performing the rite, with the names of the departed.
Is it compulsory to shave the head for pind daan?
It depends on family custom. Many families have the son performing the rite shave his head before shraddh, while others do not, or only trim the hair. Daughters and women do not shave. Ask your elders and tell the purohit, who will follow your family’s practice.
How long does a one-day pind daan in Gaya take?
Plan on four to six hours, starting in the morning. The rite begins with sankalp and tarpan at the Falgu, moves to Vishnupad and ends at Akshayavat with the purohit’s blessing. In Pitru Paksha crowds can stretch it longer, so start early and keep the afternoon free.
Can I combine Gaya pind daan with Kashi and Bodh Gaya?
Yes, and many families do. Varanasi is about 250 km from Gaya by road, and Bodh Gaya is only 12 to 15 km away. A four or five day plan gives you Kashi Vishwanath darshan and the Ganga aarti, a full day for pind daan in Gaya, and a morning at the Mahabodhi temple.
Can pind daan in Gaya be done for many ancestors at once?
Yes. The standard rite covers the paternal and maternal lines up to three generations, and the purohit can include other departed relatives, friends or those without anyone to remember them. Write the full list with relations in advance so the names are spoken correctly at the sankalp.
